Wonder Man Showrunner Opens Up On Sudden Cancellation

As Spider-Man saves Manhattan and takes home a record box-office haul, things have been much chillier for our West Coast Avengers. Despite having a second season confirmed earlier this year, Marvel pulled the plug on Wonder Man this week, leaving fans of the Disney+ series baffled. Showrunner Andrew Guest shares the confusion, opening up on TikTok about the season that was supposed to begin pre-production later this month.

“I feel how you all feel and I just wanna clear up what I can here,” Guest says in the short video. “This is not a marketing stunt. There is no movie in the works, and Destin’s schedule, and no one’s schedule, was an issue… There was a decision made internally between Disney and Marvel that this didn’t make sense for them, even though a few months ago it did.”

Guest says that contracts had been signed, schedules were aligned and the writers were ready to assemble in just a few weeks. He says that Disney never shared metrics on how well the show performed, but fans consider it one of the stronger Marvel mini-series, the hype holding it on Disney+’s most watched for weeks. Having a second season green lit felt like all the confirmation the crew needed. Guest co-created the series with Destin Daniel Cretton, who also directed Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

The series followed Simon Williams (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II), a struggling actor who lands a part in a high-profile superhero film in a world rife with them. He’s taken under the wing of Trevor Slattery (Ben Kingsley), the drunken thespian masquerading as the Mandarin in Iron Man 3. Things are looking up for Williams, with one small conundrum: He actually does possess superpowers, keeping them under wraps. He’s not interested in being a practicing superhero. He’d rather play one on TV.

Hitting Disney+ in January, The idiosyncratic approach to the oft-bench warming Avenger connected with fans, received far better than the similarly irreverent She-Hulk, and earned a second season by March. Until July, anyways.

While Spider-Man’s running hot and Doomsday looms over the holiday season, it’s pretty clear that things are in disarray at Marvel Studios after numerous layoffs and disappointing returns since Endgame. Mahershala Ali confirmed his anticipated new Blade movie has been staked. The era of making mega stars out of obscurer comic characters like Captain Marvel, Black Panther and the Guardians of the Galaxy seems to be over, with Disney rapidly orbiting around the X-Men.

Heartbroken as he is, Guest is hoping to rally peers in the industry around Abdul-Mateen, who will be up for a Primetime Emmy for his performance in September.
