Headquartered in San Francisco, Electric Plant Company emerged from stealth on October 20, 2026, announcing $11.2 million in seed funding. The startup has developed AI technology that analyzes plants’ electrical signals to identify signs of stress and determine when they may need water, nutrients or other care. Justin Mast, the CEO, is a successful entrepreneur in online garden retail.
Dual-Component System Technology
The company relies on a dual-component system to translate internal plant data into actionable insights. A low-cost hardware sensor is used. This sensor attaches directly to a plant’s stem or tissue using stainless steel screws. Its role is to measure subtle voltage changes. Data collected by the sensor is transferred to a local base station through a low-power wireless network. The data is then sent to Bombadil for processing.
Bombadil AI is a model trained over three years on bioelectrical signal data from 100 to 125 plant species. Bombadil can isolate common signals to interpret data from plant types it has never encountered before. It works by identifying seven physiological stress markers in raw voltage data. It then translates these markers into actionable indicators such as the need for water, nutrients, or immediate attention.
Target Applications
The company aims to detect crop stress on a tree-by-tree basis to reduce water usage by over 20% while increasing overall yields. It will help urban landscapers reduce plant loss during installation while also lowering city maintenance costs. Through continuous environmental monitoring, it will assess groundwater quality and provide localized risk assessments for areas at risk of forest fires.
While primarily aimed at commercial operators, the underlying technology also allows partners to build interactive consumer platforms. It can be integrated into smart home systems to offer personalized care for household plants.
