Do Collagen Supplements Work? What the Research Actually Supports

GREAT NECK, N.Y., Sept. 10, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Collagen supplements have become a staple of the “beauty from within” conversation, promising smoother, more hydrated, and youthful-looking skin. But do collagen supplements work as well as the marketing suggests? Experts at Laser by Aleya say the research points to a more complicated answer.

Recent reviews have found benefits for some measures of skin health, while newer analysis suggests those benefits may depend heavily on study quality and funding. For consumers, that makes the quality of the evidence more important than simply choosing the “best collagen for skin.”

    How Collagen Actually Works

Collagen is a structural protein that helps give skin its strength and elasticity. When collagen is consumed orally, however, it is digested into peptides and amino acids rather than delivered intact to the skin.

That means collagen supplements don’t simply replace collagen the skin has lost. The body processes the collagen-derived peptides and amino acids, which may then be used in different ways throughout the body.

What the Meta-Analyses Say, and Why They Disagree

The evidence is not as straightforward as a yes-or-no answer. A 2023 meta-analysis of 26 randomized controlled trials involving 1,721 participants found that hydrolyzed collagen significantly improved skin hydration and elasticity compared with placebo. However, the authors noted biases among the included studies.

A newer 2025 systematic review in The American Journal of Medicine analyzed 23 randomized controlled trials involving 1,474 participants taking oral collagen supplements for skin aging. Across all 23 trials, researchers found improvements in skin elasticity, hydration, and wrinkles. However, when they separated the studies by funding source, trials without pharmaceutical-company funding showed no significant benefits, while funded studies did. High-quality studies likewise found no significant effects across the measured outcomes.

That does not mean collagen supplements definitively do nothing. It means the quality and source of the evidence materially change the answer.

Best Collagen for Skin: What That Is the Wrong Question

The evidence does not establish a single best collagen for skin. In fact, studies have examined different collagen sources, formulations, and treatment periods, so it is difficult to determine whether differences in results are due to the collagen itself or other factors.

A 2019 review in the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology found preliminary evidence that oral collagen supplementation may improve skin elasticity and hydration, while noting the need for further research into optimal formulations and dosing.

For consumers, the more useful question is not which collagen is “best,” but what a particular product has been shown to do, at what dose, and under what conditions.

Topical vs Ingestible: Two Different Delivery Problems

Topical collagen is applied directly to the skin, while ingestible collagen is broken down during digestion before its components enter the bloodstream. Because the two reach the body through different routes, research on an oral collagen supplement does not automatically support claims about a topical product.

Studies of ingestible collagen typically examine outcomes such as skin hydration, elasticity, and wrinkles after supplementation. Topical products depend on their specific formulation and how their ingredients interact with the skin. The evidence needs to be considered in the context of the product and delivery method actually studied.

    What No Supplement Addresses

Collagen supplements may support certain aspects of skin health, but they are not a substitute for the habits and treatments that address other concerns. Healthy skin habits such as sun protection and an appropriate skincare routine remain important regardless of whether someone takes a supplement.

Also, collagen cannot address concerns such as unwanted hair, stubble, ingrown hairs, or shaving-related irritation. Those concerns require a different approach. For expert hair removal guidance, schedule a consultation with Laser by Aleya.

Do Collagen Supplements Work Alongside Professional Treatment?

Collagen supplements may support skin hydration and elasticity, while professional treatments can address specific aesthetic concerns. Used together, they can form part of a broader approach to skin health rather than serve as alternatives to one another.

“Collagen supplements may support skin health, but they are not a one-size-fits-all solution,” said Aleya Bamdad, Founder & CEO of Laser by Aleya. “The right and effective routine for healthy-looking skin depends on your skin, your goals, and the evidence behind each treatment.”
