Avengers: Endgame directors Joe and Anthony Russo congratulated the cast and crew of Spider-Man: Brand New Day on breaking Endgame’s box office record for the biggest domestic opening weekend of all time, proclaiming, “The gauntlet has been passed.”

The Russo brothers posted a Bosslogic-created image on Instagram of Spidey, draped in the American flag, and wearing the Infinity Stones as rings while holding a chess piece. The post read:

“Huge congratulations to Destin, Tom, Zendaya, Jacob, Jon, Mark, Sadie, Florence, Michael, Marisa, producers Kevin, Amy, Avi, and Rachel, and the entire Spider-Man: Brand New Day cast and crew on making domestic box office opening weekend history. The gauntlet has been passed…”

The Russos will get a crack at reclaiming that opening weekend record when their film Avengers: Doomsday opens in theaters in December.

Domestically, Spider-Man: Brand New Day will be available in IMAX theaters this Friday, August 7, even as The Odyssey extends its run in 70mm IMAX theaters through September 16.

As excited as Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures are about Brand New Day’s record-breaking box office debut, IGN writer Alex Zalben cautioned in an op-ed that “it clinches a feeling that’s been bubbling for the past few years: The Marvel Cinematic Universe as we know it is over. … Going forward, they’ll be making Spider-Man movies, Avengers movies, and that’s pretty much it.”

Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which had the second biggest international opening of all time, has already crossed $1 billion at the worldwide box office in less than a week.

In his Spider-Man: Brand New Day review, IGN’s Tom Jorgensen awarded the film a score of 7/10, writing that the film “effectively refocuses on the most reliable pillars of the webslinger: battling inner turmoil, swinging around NYC saving the day, and looking cool while doing so.”

    Thwip!
