BMW and E.ON will start a vehicle-to-grid program in 2026: The new IX3 feeds electricity back into the network and brings owners up to 720 euros a year. How this works and what needs to be considered.

    Step up and earn money

In March 2026, BMW and E.ON bring the first commercial vehicle-to-grid offer for private customers to Germany with the new IX3. The new IX3 thus becomes an active part of the energy market and can feed electricity from the vehicle battery back into the network if necessary. Customers who participate in the intelligent charging and unloading receive an annual bonus of up to 720 euros – they drive up to 14,000 kilometers free of charge annually. This requires a Wallbox from BMW and a V2G current tariff of E.On.

    Technology without battery wear

According to BMW and E.ON, the bonus is 24 cents per hour, a maximum of 60 euros per month and 720 euros are possible annually. To do this, the vehicle must be infected for 250 hours a month (eight hours a day). There is no minimum connection time, the charging destination of your own car remains unaffected by the bidirectional shop.

The two companies emphasize that the new technology should not have a negative impact on the battery life. According to the BMW, the additional discharge processes will not affect the service life of the vehicle battery. Intelligent protective functions should ensure that the high -voltage battery is always kept in an optimum for the service life.

In addition to the bonus, there is a back feed for every discharged kilowatt hour back into the network. There is currently no information about this. According to the manufacturer’s configurator, the required BMW Wallbox Professional costs 2094 euros and enables bidirectional charging with up to eleven kW performance. It supports Vehicle-to-Home (V2H) and is prepared for Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G).

The bidirectional shop is available at the start in IX3, BMW wants to offer the technology in other models-the cars should be integrated in the long term in an energy platform that combines charging infrastructure, photovoltaics, heat pumps and smart home systems.

    Competition follows

BMW and E.ON are not the only providers who rely on bidirectional shop. Mercedes-Benz also announced a program for bidirectional charging at the IAA Mobility in Munich. Under the label MB.Charge Home, the new fully electric Mercedes GLC 400 EQ and later other models should also support the feed -in of electricity into the house network from 2026. The Volkswagen subsidiary Elli also presented a V2H pilot project at the IAA and announced a new equinight-compliant direct current wall box.
