Adam Sandler wears socks when he goes swimming because “he can’t bend to take them off”

Adam Sandler’s daughter Sunny has revealed her father swims with socks on, as he’s unable to bend over to take them off.

The unusual anecdote came during an appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, promoting her new film Don’t Say Good Luck. While there, she recalled a time when she was younger when she would imitate Adam Sandler’s infamously casual dress sense.

“My mom tells a story from when I was younger,” Sunny said. “Me and my sister, we dressed up in his clothes, before that was popular and cool. The big shirts, the shorts, we held Diet Cokes and yelled about the air conditioning being off. And then we jumped in the pool with our socks on.”

She then explained: “He wears his socks in the pool because he can’t bend to take them off on land,” to which Fallon responded: “That is not true at all… he’s the funniest dude ever.”

Fallon sought clarification by asking: “So he jumps in the pool with his socks and then floats his feet up to take them off?”, to which Sunny replied: “Yes, and then he’ll drain them, and then you play catch with them.”

Adam Sandler has been warmly embraced for his casual dress sense, which is in stark contrast to the fashion conscious Hollywood elite. In 2025, he poked fun at his reputation by appearing at that year’s Oscars in a blue hoodie and shorts, and taking part in a sketch with host Conan O’Brien.

“Adam, what are you wearing?” asked O’Brien, as the camera cut to him sitting in the audience wearing a sky blue hoodie, dark blue shorts, white socks and trainers. Pretending to be outraged, Sandler replied: “Nobody even thought about what I was wearing until you brought it up”.

After being described by O’Brien as looking like “A guy playing video poker at 2am”, the comedian said: “I like the way I look. Because I’m a good person; I don’t care about what I wear and what I don’t wear [and that] my snazzy gym shorts and fluffy sweatshirt offend you so much that you had to mock me in front my peers!” He joked he was leaving to play in a basketball game with “The guy from Nosferatu” [Bill Skarsgård].
