New Girl star Max Greenfield has revealed that a show reunion is “happening”.
The hit US sitcom originally ran between 2011 and 2018, and featured the actor alongside Zooey Deschanel, Jake Johnson and Lamorne Morris. The concept follows a quirky teacher who moves into an LA loft with three men.
Greenfield, who played Schmidt, recently appeared on Today, where he was asked about previous comments from co-stars about a potential revival.
“As far as I know, it’s happening,” he said, adding: “I’ve seen scripts, they’re amazing.”
Show creator Elizabeth Meriwether subsequently responded to Greenfield’s comments on Instagram, joking: “Max has just been very adamantly asking to be the ‘New Girl.’ He wants the title to be Max Greenfield Is The New Girl.”
“I did think the scripts were amazing personally until they got, you know, sort of ripped apart,” she then added. “I wasn’t gonna say any of this publicly, but then Max decided to make it all public.”
Morris recently quipped on Today that Johnson was holding up a reunion and that Hollywood had changed him, while Johnson jokingly accused Morris of being the hold-up.
This isn’t the first time a reunion has been touted following the show’s conclusion eight years ago, with Johnson addressing speculation in 2020.
“When we were going away, Fox was being pretty cool and saying like, ‘We don’t want to cancel you, but nobody’s watching,’” he said on Slate’s Thirst Aid Kit podcast. “So when we did our final season…Zooey Deschanel and I literally wrote an email to the heads [of the Network] asking for more, for the…fans who stayed with us.”
He continued: “You can’t end the way season six ended where it was rushed. I was like, ‘Give [writer] Liz Meriwether the time to finish this right!’ So now that there’s people following [the show], I’m like, it’s not like you’re 10 years too late, you’re 18 months…it’s a little bittersweet. We were just working!”
Johnson added of a possible comeback: “[Co-star] Hannah Simone and I were texting two nights ago… Zooey and I still text. All the guys and I are on a text chain. Everybody’s still linked up, so I would be surprised if there’s not some sort of a thing at some point where everybody comes back.”
