Xbox Labs Is A Big Announcement About AI That’s Missing The Word AI

There’s been a flood of genAI gaming projects this month. Look into a few projects and your feed will soon become inundated with vibe-coded ports, mash-ups, mods, and homebrew features. Plenty of it is fake. Much of it is busted. But it’s not all junk. Some of it actually works. It’s not clear where it’s all headed, but Microsoft is reacting faster than usual and planting its flag in an emerging scene of genAI gaming stuff. It announced a new initiative called Xbox Labs and it did so without directly mentioning artificial intelligence, or even super intelligence for that matter, even once.

“In recent weeks, we’ve seen games rapidly decompiled and rebuilt to run on hardware they were never originally designed to support,” Xbox CEO Asha Sharma wrote in a new blog post on October 13. “Windows PC builds have been translated to run on Apple Silicon or ported to run inside a browser through WebAssembly and WebGPU, the latter now approaching 90% global browser support. Perhaps more surprisingly, we’ve seen many of the biggest games in the world have been remixed into the source code of another.”

You would think this had all magically appeared in the ether. Things “have been translated” and “have been remixed,” but by who, using what? Hint: people using AI models like Claude Opus 5.5.

In light of this rapidly evolving new trend, Sharma is having Xbox CTO Scott Van Vliet “stand up” a “small group of game makers, engineers and scientists whose job is to turn emerging ideas into things our players and developers can experience.” The group will be called Xbox Labs, they’ll build “out in the open,” and success will be measured by whether people actually care about what the group ships.

Toward the end of the post, Sharma adds, “coding became the first major workload for agents because they can write, run, and test software.” Again, no direct mention of “AI” agents, or the wider AI arms race that is currently making the Xbox console, the most important of the “4Cs” the team “remains committed to,” widely expensive to make, sell, and purchase.

It will be interesting to see what comes out of Xbox Labs, and whether Xbox can figure out how to talk about it without igniting accusations of flooding gaming with even more genAI slop. The bet may be that as long as Xbox Labs can figure out something cool that players actually like, AI will stop being such a dirty word in the gaming world. GenAI gaming tutorials were one of the big features Xbox was supposed to ship this year, and one of the first that Sharma canceled after taking over.

The reaction online to Xbox’s first wave of AI features was widespread scorn and vitriol. We’ll see if Xbox Labs can deliver something that provokes a different response.
