X-Men ‘97 Season 2 Post-Credits Scene Explained

X-Men ‘97 Season 2 ends on a mostly happy note for our mutant heroes. Sure, Professor Xavier’s (Marquand) shiny new X-Corps headquarters is obliterated, but Apocalypse is defeated and Rogue (Lenore Zann) and Gambit (A. J. LoCascio) are reunited at last. Only the noble sacrifice of Nightcrawler (Adrian Hough) casts a shadow over this lighthearted reunion.

That said, the finale makes it clear that dark days lie ahead for Xavier and his team. The post-credits scene reintroduces Mystique (Randall Carpenter), a villain who played a key role in the original X-Men: The Animated Series but had been sitting out X-Men ‘97 up till now. Mystique is shown infiltrating Dr. Valerie Cooper’s (Catherine Disher) office and rifling through her computer files. She even kills Cooper, with the implication being that she’s going to be impersonating this government liaison in Season 3. How much damage can a self-serving shape-shifter do in a position of power like this? We’re about to find out.

As if that weren’t bad enough, we can overhear a broadcast in this scene that reveals that Graydon Creed (Ben Pronsky) has just been elected President of the United States. As bad as things were for mutantkind, at least they had a reasonably sympathetic ear in the White House in the form of Robert Kelly. Now Kelly has been replaced by a virulently anti-mutant firebrand, one who’s sure to stir up a new wave of hatred and fear.

Sidebar – This reveal calls into question when exactly the series is taking place. There was no US presidential election in 1997. Is the show actually set in 1996, or has more time passed than we realized, and we’re already out of the ‘90s and in the year 2000?

All in all, this is a very foreboding look at what’s ahead for the X-Men. For every step forward they take in defeating an imminent threat to the world, they seem to take another step back in their fight for peaceful human/mutant coexistence.

What We Know About X-Men ‘97 Season 3

Fans needn’t worry about whether this post-credits scene will be followed up. X-Men ‘97 Season 3 is definitely happening. In fact, the writers and animators are hard at work on both Seasons 3 and 4 as we speak, and executive producer Brad Winderbaum is hopeful we’ll see as many as 10 seasons before all is said and done.

At SDCC 2026, we learned that Season 3 is currently in the final stages of animation right now, while Season 4 is in the animatics stage. Season 3 should be on track to hit Disney+ in 2027, followed by Season 4 in 2028, meaning fans don’t have to wait multiple years between seasons anymore.

Also at SDCC, we got our first look at Season 3 in the form of a clip focused on Mystique and the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. The characters are shown in the streets painting pro-mutant graffiti and battling a new fleet of patriotic-themed Sentinels (no doubt a product of the new Creed administration). Interestingly, while the Brotherhood roster is similar to that of the original series (including Blob, Pyro, Avalanche, and Toad), it also includes a surprise addition in the form of the electricity-powered teen mutant Surge.

Based on that clip, it seems we can expect Mystique to factor into the conflict from multiple angles, both in her role as leader of the Brotherhood and her secret role impersonating the late Dr. Cooper. No doubt the new season will also delve deeper into the twisted family dynamic involving Mystique, Sabretooth, Rogue, and Graydon Creed.

Beyond that, we can only guess at the storylines the series will explore in Season 3. Based on how Season 2 wraps, we’re assuming that Xavier’s brief flirtation with overseeing X-Corps has ended and that he and his team are returning to the Xavier Institute to become teachers again. It also looks as though we can expect Colossus (Robert Cait) to play a bigger role in the series now that he’s finally, officially joined the X-Men. That could very easily involve an episode focused on his sister Illyana (Courtenay Taylor), whose soul may now be trapped in the realm of Limbo.

We also wouldn’t be at all surprised if Onslaught is positioned as the main villain of Season 3 or 4. For those unfamiliar with the character, Onslaught is a psychic demon birthed from echoes of Xavier and Magneto’s (Matthew Waterson) minds. The series has seemingly been laying the groundwork for Onslaught since late Season 1. In fact, former head writer Beau DeMayo has suggested that Season 2 was originally intended to feature Onslaught in its 10th episode before the season was shortened. Plans may have changed, but possibly only to save Onslaught for a later date.

There might also be further fallout from Magneto’s death in Season 2, Episode 4. Perhaps the series will introduce Joseph, Magneto’s young clone? It also seems only a matter of time until the series introduces its take on more contemporary X-Men villains like Cassandra Nova, Orchis, 3K and the Chairman, and the Children of the Vault. As fast as this series moves, there’s still a wealth of classic X-Men material worth adapting. Maybe 10 seasons isn’t such a crazy idea…
