Wonder Man Showrunner Says Contracts Were Signed, Schedules Were Cleared Before Marvel Canceled Season 2

Wonder Man showrunner Andrew Guest sounded off on Marvel’s decision to cancel Season 2, confirming that “contracts were signed” and “schedules were cleared” before its abrupt demise.

Guest is one of a few members of the crew for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) spinoff show to share his thoughts on its cancellation in the wake of the Disney+ show’s sudden and unexpected end. His message to fans arrived via TikTok and held back little regarding his disappointment.

“I just want to say I’ve been listening,” he said. “I appreciate you all. I feel how you all feel, and I just want to clear up what I can here: This is not a marketing stunt, there is no movie in the works, and [director Destin Daniel Cretton’s] schedule – and no one’s schedule – was an issue.”

Marvel announced Wonder Man would return for Season 2 in March and then revealed it had U-turned on that decision last week, July 30. Guest clarified that he, Cretton, and stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Ben Kingsley “loved making the show” and “felt passionately about continuing to do it.” For some reason, Marvel had other plans.

“Contracts were signed, schedules were cleared,” he added. “The writers’ room was supposed to start this month. The production was supposed to begin early next year, and there was a decision made internally, between Disney and Marvel, that this didn’t make sense for them, even though, a few months ago, it did.

“And that’s, essentially, all I really know. Numbers aren’t really shared with me.”

Guest added that the first episode of Wonder Man Season 2 had been completed and an outline for the remainder of the season had been drafted before Marvel canceled it. We may never know how Simon Williams and Trevor Slattery’s stories would have grown with another batch of episodes, but the showrunner said “everyone felt really good about” the now-canceled season.

Guest suggested the Wonder Man crew was just as shocked to learn about the project’s end as the fans were, but it doesn’t sound like they had much of a heads-up either. Arian Moayed, who reprised his MCU role as Agent Cleary for the show, chimed in on the discourse surrounding the cancellation with a statement on Instagram. Posted Friday, July 31, he said, “we all heard about the news last week.”

“We are all pretty gutted by the news mostly because Wonder Man is a beautiful show, full of beautiful performances and led by beautiful writing,” Moayed said. “Our show runner, Andrew Guest, made something so pure and funny and heartwarming with his scalpel-esque writing that I hope it’s studied and celebrated for years to come.”

Wonder Man may not have garnered the eyes necessary to warrant a second season from Disney and Marvel’s perspective, but social media feeds following its demise have been filled by fans who thought otherwise – and it’s easy to see why. Those who did watch the show generally really enjoyed it, with its first season scoring a 91% critic score and 87% audience score on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes‘ website. IGN gave Season 1 an 8/10 review, calling it a “a smaller, low-stakes MCU adventure that thrives on the strength of Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Ben Kingsley’s performances.”

Abdul-Mateen was one of the first to share his thoughts on the end of Wonder Man, thanking fans with his own Instagram post. Guest had shared thoughts earlier in the week, too, but used his TikTok video as an opportunity to elaborate.

“I appreciate everybody getting out there and letting your voices be heard about how you feel about this,” he continued. “I think there’s important conversations being had online about the kind of stories that we’re prioritizing and the kind of shows platforms want to make.”

Guest signed off, saying he hopes Emmy voters are keeping Abdul-Mateen in mind come awards season. The actor was nominated for Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for the 2026 show.
