    What an AI Robotic Arm Could Mean for NZ Disability Support

    A new AI-guided robotic arm is heading into home trials later this year, marking another step toward assistive technology that can learn how people already live and move.

    The technology reflects a direction New Zealand is already trying to take. Rather than asking disabled people to adapt to standardised equipment, AI-powered systems like Arlo are designed to work with the movements, communication methods, and accessibility controls users already rely on. This philosophy closely aligns with the country’s Enabling Good Lives approach.

    That makes Arlo more than an overseas prototype. As AI-powered assistive devices mature and enter everyday settings, New Zealand’s disability, rehabilitation, and aged-care sectors will increasingly need to determine how they fit within funding models, clinical pathways, and long-term support.

    What Sielo built, and why it’s news now

    Sielo Robotics, founded out of the University of Ottawa, raised CA$1 million (roughly NZ$1.2 million) in seed funding in May, ending years of relying on student competitions and research grants. The money is meant to speed up development of Arlo, the company’s robotic arm, with home beta testing planned by the end of 2026.

    What distinguishes Sielo’s approach is who shaped the design. Hollis Pierce, the company’s head of accessibility and partnerships, uses a powered wheelchair and helped test Arlo using a space mouse, a six-direction controller. He described taking his first-ever selfie with the arm at age 38 as a task that used to take about an hour and now feels like playing a video game. Chief revenue officer Laila Burns said the company had largely run on grassroots interest before this raise, rather than on formal investment.

    Sielo is also building AI features intended to let Arlo learn and repeat routine movements, easing the load on manual controllers, according to robotics control engineer Masoud Karimi. Chief technology officer Rafaël Hébert has pointed to a harder problem: matching the arm to the wide range of controls people already use, from eye gaze and joysticks to switches built into a wheelchair’s headrest.

    Where this fits New Zealand’s independent living push

    New Zealand already has a large, and largely underserved, population this kind of technology is aimed at. Stats NZ’s most recent disability survey counted 851,000 disabled New Zealanders in 2023, about 17% of people in households. Whaikaha, the Ministry of Disabled People, has reported that 62% of disabled New Zealanders have at least one unmet need, including for assistive equipment or technology.

    That backdrop is why New Zealand’s disability strategy, built around the Enabling Good Lives approach, emphasises giving disabled people more control over the supports they use rather than defaulting to standardised aids or full-time carer assistance. 

    AI-powered arms like Arlo are not a fit for that system yet. Sielo has no local distributor or funder, but they represent the kind of category New Zealand’s assistive technology sector will need to evaluate as more entrants reach market.

    A rehabilitation angle, not a therapy replacement

    Sielo pitches Arlo as an independence tool rather than a clinical device, but the underlying robotics sits close to work already happening in New Zealand’s own rehabilitation research. The University of Auckland’s Auckland Bioengineering Institute runs a biorobotics group that develops upper-limb assistance and rehabilitation robots specifically for stroke patients, as well as lower-limb and shoulder-injury devices.

    The relevance isn’t that Arlo replaces physiotherapy. It’s that both efforts point to the same shift: assistive and rehabilitation robotics moving out of hospital labs and into homes, where recovery from strokes, spinal injuries, or other upper-limb impairments increasingly happens.

    Ageing population and an already strained workforce

    New Zealand’s aged care sector is short by around 1,200 registered nurses, out of a workforce of roughly 5,100. Additionally, nearly 940 beds have closed or gone unused this year as facilities struggle to staff them safely. 

    Almost 20% of New Zealanders are projected to be 65 or older by 2028. That gap is exactly why the University of Auckland has already piloted an assistive robot, Bomy, at retirement homes to help with daily routines. 

    Sielo’s arm is a different product built for a different disability group, but it belongs to the same emerging category. It’s not a carer substitute, but a way to shift some routine, low-risk tasks away from a workforce that is already stretched.

    Data and oversight questions still to come

    An AI system designed to learn and repeat a person’s daily movements, in their own home, will generate data about how that person lives. 

    New Zealand already has a framework for handling exactly that kind of information: the Privacy Act 2020 and the Health Information Privacy Code 2020, which sets specific rules for agencies handling health information.

    None of that applies to Sielo directly while Arlo remains unavailable here. Still, any local health-tech vendor, aged-care provider, or scheme considering similar devices would need to work through those obligations before deployment, not after.

    Arlo is still a pre-commercial device with real-world testing yet to happen. Its relevance to New Zealand will hinge on unglamorous questions: whether Sielo secures insurance or funder coverage, whether it can price competing assistive systems below, and whether the home beta testing due by year’s end holds up outside a lab. 

    Answers to those questions, more than the robot itself, will determine whether this becomes a live option for New Zealand’s disability, rehabilitation, and aged-care sectors — or stays a Canadian pilot project.
