Warner Bros Korea has set a September 16 release date for its remake of 2015 hit comedy The Intern, with Choi Min-sik and Han So-hee in the roles played by Robert De Niro and Anne Hathaway in the original film.
Choi, known internationally from Korean films including Oldboy, The Admiral: Roaring Currents and recent hit Exhuma, is playing an older intern working at a fashion startup in the highly-anticipated film. Han, who starred in Netflix’s Gyeongseong Creature, plays the young fashion entrepreneur whose startup has become a huge success within three years of launch.
Produced by Anthology Studio and Warner Bros Korea, the Korean remake is directed by Kim Do-young, whose credits include Kim Ji-young: Born 1982, about the pressures faced by Korean women in the workforce, and romantic drama Once We Were Us (itself a remake of Chinese film Us And Them, directed by Rene Liu).
Warner Bros Korea also dropped a poster (see above) while announcing the release date today. The film will open in the run-up to Korea’s Chuseok holiday (September 24-26), a three-day public holiday that is one of the territory’s peak box office periods.
The original film, directed by Nancy Meyers, grossed more than $194M worldwide, five times its budget, and drew a huge following among audiences in Korea.
An Indian remake was also announced in 2020, set to star Deepika Padukone and Amitabh Bachchan, although there hasn’t been any news from that production since Padukone announced last year that she was stepping away from the acting role but would remain on board as a producer.
