Ace Ventura and Sonic the Hedgehog star Jim Carrey will front a live-action movie adaptation of The Jetsons.
Warner Bros. confirmed the film today in a letter to shareholders, after previous, unofficial whispers that the project was in the works last fall. At the time, Jurassic World: Dominion director Colin Trevorrow was discussed as helming the space age story, though this is yet to be confirmed.
The Jetsons will mark Carrey’s first non-Sonic the Hedgehog movie in over a decade (since 2016’s offbeat murder mystery Dark Crimes). Carrey will next reprise his role as Dr. Ivo “Eggman” Robotnik in 2027’s Sonic the Hedgehog 4.
The actor previously considered retiring after Sonic 2 and has subsequently kept something of a low profile in recent years. However, Carrey made headlines this February when he turned up in France to collect a prestigious award and speak entirely in French — something that fuelled online rumors his appearance had been the work of an impersonator or clone.
Explaining his decision to return for Sonic 3, Carrey said he bought a load of stuff and simply needs the money. “I came back to this universe because, first of all, I get to play a genius, which is a bit of a stretch,” Carrey said. “And, you know, it’s just… I bought a lot of stuff and I need the money, frankly.”
A sci-fi counterpart to The Flintstones, Hanna-Barbera’s classic cartoon series originally aired in 1962, and was later revived for more episodes in the 1980s. The series stars George and Jane Jetson and their two children, as well as a robot maid, in a futuristic world of flying cars.
Numerous attempts have been made to reboot The Jetsons over the past two decades, with a live-action film planned in the early 2000s that never got off the ground. Bizarrely, the rapper formerly known as Kanye West was involved at oe point to some degree, though Warner Bros. later said these talks had only been “preliminary.”
Over the last decade, Warner Bros. has continued to explore the idea of a reboot further, with ideas for an animated movie from the director of Sausage Party, a live-action sitcom produced by Robert Zemeckis, and now this Carrey-backed live-action movie. Here’s hoping this time things pan out.
