Several music stars are set to appear in the new instalment of the V/H/S franchise, titled V/H/S/MIXTAPE.
Beginning in 2012, the V/H/S movies are found footage horror anthologies, with each movie broken up into different segments of fictional horror presented as reality. There have been eight V/H/S movies so far, with directors such as Johannes Roberts (Primate), Gareth Evans (The Raid), and Scott Derrickson (Doctor Strange) contributing.
Now, Variety reports that streaming service Shudder will debut the ninth instalment, which will be released on October 9. Among those directing sequences will be Wu-Tang Clan legend RZA, while Flying Lotus and Ghost’s Tobias Forge will contribute music video interludes. Heavy Metal band GWAR will also make an appearance in the film.
RZA has been involved in movies for decades, scoring Quentin Tarantino’s classic Kill Bill movies, as well as directing the 2012 action movie The Man With The Iron Fists. The film remarks a return to the franchise for Flying Lotus, who directed the segment Ozzy’s Dungeon for the fifth movie in the series, V/H/S/99.
An official press release said the film “cranks the signature found-footage horror up to eleven with an electrifying new anthology where music and sound become the source of terror. United by a theme that explores the power of music, rhythm, and audio to haunt, possess, and destroy, the film blends cosmic horror, psychological suspense, outrageous splatter, and groundbreaking practical effects into one unforgettable mixtape of nightmares.”
The V/H/S franchise recently announced another movie in the works, based on the internet stories about the SCP Foundation, a a secret organisation that is responsible for capturing and studying various paranormal and supernatural entities (referred to as “anomalies” or “SCPs”). The film is scheduled for release in 2027.
Found footage horror appears to be making a comeback, with a new film based on The Blair Witch Project in the works from YouTube short film director Dylan Clark.
