The US Navy’s Strategic Systems Programs has completed a series of missile test flights involving the unarmed Trident II D5LE missiles.

These tests, which took place off the east coast of Florida from 17 to 21 September 2025, were part of routine evaluations to verify the reliability and accuracy of the strategic weapon system.

Despite the spectacle, officials emphasised that these tests were not a response to any specific global events but rather scheduled exercises.

The tests marked a significant milestone for the Trident II D5 programme, bringing the total number of successful flight test launches to 197.

The missiles were fired from a submerged Ohio-class ballistic missile submarine (SSBN) and followed a trajectory that concluded in a designated broad ocean area within the Atlantic.

To ensure safety during the testing period, the Navy issued Notice to Airmen (NOTAMs) and Notice to Mariners (NOTMARs), establishing no-fly zones and maritime exclusion areas respectively. These precautions are standard protocol for such operations.

The Trident II D5 strategic weapon system, first developed in the 1980s, underwent a life-extension programme that was completed in 2017.  This update is intended to extend the service life of the missiles into the 2040s, ensuring that they remain a cornerstone of the strategic deterrent capabilities of the US.

US Navy’s Strategic Systems Programs Director Vice Admiral Johnny R. Wolfe said: “Our Nation’s submarine launched ballistic missile system has been a critical component of our national security since the 1960s, and these launches continue to demonstrate the credibility and reliability of our strategic deterrence capabilities.”

The role of these weapons as a deterrent is underscored by their unique ability to discourage aggression and reassure US allies about national security commitments.

The Strategic Systems Programs command oversees all aspects of lifecycle support for this crucial component of the nation’s nuclear Triad, including training, systems management, and ensuring overall safety and effectiveness.

These test flights demonstrate ongoing efforts to maintain and refine the US’ strategic defence posture in an ever-evolving global security landscape.
