EXCLUSIVE: The Bonfire of the Vanities is looking for a new home.
The high-profile series adaptation of Tom Wolfe’s 1987 novel from top showrunner David E. Kelley and Batman director Matt Reeves, which had been set up at Apple TV for development, is no longer going forward there, Deadline has learned. The studio behind it, Warner Bros. Television, along with the team at David E. Kelley Productions, will be shopping it to other buyers shortly, I hear.
Deadline reported exclusively in April that The Bonfire of the Vanities had been sold to Apple TV. After months of development, the streamer has opted not to proceed with it. According to sources, the parties were not creatively aligned, and Kelley was not happy about how the project had been handled.
He remains in business with Apple TV on two other series that have been picked up for second seasons: Margo’s Got Money Troubles, which recently received eight Emmy nominations, and Presumed Innocent, a four-time Emmy nominee last year.

Wolfe’s The Bonfire of the Vanities explores greed, avarice and racial divisions between the haves and have nots in 1980s New York City. Reeves is set to direct. Kelley and Matthew Tinker executive produce for David E. Kelley Productions, Reeves and Sarah Geismer for 6th and Idaho Productions.
Kelley is writing in his second turn adapting a Wolfe novel after creating and executive producing the 2024 Netflix limited series A Man in Full, which starred Jeff Daniels and Diane Lane.
