The Avalanches have announced new album ‘No Bad Memories’, which is inspired by jingles and start-up sounds. Check out the joyous single ‘Can’t Get Over Losing You’ below.
The record marks the fourth from the Australian electronic group, and is set for release on October 16. Visit here to pre-order.
According to the Melbourne artists, the LP comes inspired by the “simultaneously magical and insidious” ways that jingles and advertisements go into our memories, and is meant to be an “ambivalent ode” to nostalgic jingles and start-up sounds.
“It’s been interesting as adults to reflect on this often stunning period of marketing – the creativity, filmmaking, photography and music – which was also selling a completely unobtainable dream,” the band shared. “The way we value devices and products; the way we reflect and represent ‘a life lived’; the wonder of memory and deep power of nostalgia, especially in sound.”
They continued: “Revisiting imagery and jingles from childhood and realizing how profoundly they have stuck. Taking these sound sources from within the heart of this kinda corporate framework and flipping the fragments into our own kind of joyous pop music… eventually we arrived at this world of ‘No Bad Memories’.
Already the record has been previewed by the haunting ‘Blue Shadows’ featuring Karen O, the energetic ‘Every Single Weekend’ with Jamie xx, the intriguing ‘Together’ with Nikki Nair, Jessy Lanza and Prentiss.
Now, they have shared another single, the upbeat ‘Can’t Get Over Losing You’ which features guest vocals from Portraits of Tracy.
Centred around garage rock drums, the single sees the group blend euphoric melodies with the distinctive vocal style of the American singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist.
“Tracy is an hilarious, brave and tender human being who Tony and I have become very close to over the years we’ve been making music together,” shared Robbie Chater. “Tracy’s production and mixing is insane but it’s her voice and songwriting that break my heart time after time, truly a generational talent! We feel very fortunate to make music together.”
The praise was reciprocated by Portraits of Tracy too, who shared: “Working with The Avalanches was such an awesome experience! I don’t find myself collaborating too often with peeps, but as soon as we connected it felt just right. We started the song in 2024 and rerecorded it / finished it in 2025, and now she just sounds lovely!”
The band recently performed at Primavera Sound Barcelona and announced a run of London headline shows as part of Pitchfork Music Festival in November. Earlier this year, The Avalanches also hosted a surprise “free party” in the capital.
NME spoke to The Avalanches in 2020 about the legacy of their landmark 2000 debut album ‘Since I Left You’.
“I still remember four years [after it was released] my girlfriend at the time said, ‘You know people say it’s a really classic record?’” Chater said. “I’d never heard anybody say that. I just heard all the shit I should’ve done better.
“I have a great relationship with the album now. It sounds like a very young me made it. It’s naïve, heart-on-sleeve, it was never cool or ironic. It was passionate, of the moment, full of joy.”
