Okinawa’s elephant walk at Kadena Air Base last week was more than a sensational photography stunt—it was a sensational demonstration of American airpower in the Indo-Pacific. Conducted as part of the Beverly High drill, it was not simply jets lining up for a photo op; it was an orchestrated drill in coordination, readiness, and sheer capability within the different branches of the military. With so many aircraft and missile defense systems available, it served to demonstrate just how widespread America’s activities in the Pacific have become.

    8. Scale and Diversity Like Never Before

The formation this year consisted of 53 planes from the Navy, Army, and Air Force, one of the largest of its type ever held in Japan. They ranged from 24 F-35A Lightning II stealth fighter jets, eight F-15E Strike Eagles, six HH-60W Jolly Green II helicopters, two MQ-9 Reapers, two MC-130J Commando II special operation planes, six KC-135 Stratotankers, one RC-135 Rivet Joint, one E-3 Sentry AWACS plane, two EA-18G Growlers, one P-8 Poseidon, and two Army Patriot missile defense batteries. The gigantic size nearly doubled the convention of last year and outgunned a comparable drill at Hill Air Force Base in Utah.

    7. F-35A Lightning II – The Game Changer

Leading the pack were 24 F-35A Lightning IIs from various squadrons. With stealth, advanced sensors, and real-time data-sharing, the F-35 is the “quarterback” of the sky, linking air, land, sea, space, and cyber forces. Its ability to penetrate deeply defended zones undetected and share targeting information with other forces changes the way future combat is fought.

    6. F-15E Strike Eagles – Heavy Hitters

Eight F-15E Strike Eagles joined the formation from Seymour Johnson Air Base, providing tremendous strike power. Built to penetrate far behind enemy lines, two-seat fighters carry a heavier payload than the F-35. Combined with stealth fighters, they form a layered attack wherein speed, firepower, and precision all come together.

    5. Electronic Eyes and Ears

Intelligence and electronic warfare capabilities were tested in full. Two Navy EA-18G Growlers conducted suppression of enemy air defenses, and an Air Force RC-135 Rivet Joint conducted signals intelligence. A Navy P-8 Poseidon conducted maritime reconnaissance, and an E-3 Sentry AWACS brought the overall air picture together. In concert, these platforms detect and react to threats long before they can cause harm.

    4. The Logistics Backbone

It takes planning and precision to keep such a massive airborne deployment up and running. Six KC-135 Stratotankers and two MC-130J Commando IIs provided continuous air refueling, extending the aircraft’s range. The MC-130Js also supported special operations, ranging from troop insertion to air refueling, helicopter, and carrier aircraft. Without these logistical requirements, the formation would not be able to sustain operations for more than brief durations.

    3. Strength in Base Defense

For the first time in history, two Army Patriot missile batteries were positioned alongside aircraft, pointing to the importance of ground air defense. Their presence reinforced the point that Kadena is not just a launch platform—it’s also a well-defended fortress.

    2. Authentic Joint Force Operations

Throughout, the exercise was a smooth teamwork effort between the Navy, Army, and Air Force. In today’s warfare, unity of effort by air, sea, and land is required, and Kadena’s strategic position is well-suited to coordinate both joint operations and allied operations. Such coordination ensures a swift and effective response across the Pacific.

    1. Readiness and a Clear Message

This elephant walk was not just about spectacular visuals; it tested concepts like Agile Combat Employment in real-world applications, such as speedy dispersal and generation of sorties in bad weather. Airmen practiced emergency maneuvers, battle damage repair and recovery, and runway recovery. The leaders noted that these demonstrations send a clear message: those forces are ready, capable, and together.

Behind the scenes, weeks of meticulous planning went into keeping everything on track. Support staff and maintenance crews worked around the clock to get each aircraft ready without interrupting ongoing operations.

In the years ahead, Kadena will be home to next-generation F-15EX Eagle II fighters, cementing its role as a strategic base for U.S. Pacific air operations for the foreseeable future.
