Samsung has announced the introduction of its Micro RGB Technology with the launch of a 115-inch display featuring micro-scale RGB LED backlighting.

The display uses individually controlled red, green, and blue micro RGB LEDs, each measuring less than 100 micrometres in size, laid out in a highly precise pattern behind the television panel. This architecture allows for precise management of each RGB LED, differing from conventional LED backlighting systems.

According to the company, the Micro RGB display is engineered to provide improved colour accuracy, contrast, and a heightened sense of immersion for users in the ultra-premium television segment. The 115-inch screen is the first commercial product to utilise Samsung’s proprietary Micro RGB Technology in this way.

    Precision control

“Micro RGB achieves new levels of precision for controlling micrometer-sized RGB LEDs, raising the bar for colour accuracy and contrast in LED consumer displays,” said Taeyong Son, Executive Vice President and Head of the R&D Team of the Visual Display (VD) Business at Samsung Electronics. “With this launch, we’re setting the standard in the large-sized, ultra-premium TV market and reinforcing our commitment to next-generation display innovation.”

Samsung’s Micro RGB AI engine is central to the display’s picture and sound optimisation. The engine leverages artificial intelligence processing to analyse each frame in real time, adjusting colour output automatically to enhance image realism and immersion. The Micro RGB Colour Booster Pro identifies scenes with subdued colours and enhances these tones, aiming to provide consistent vibrancy across different types of content.

The technology further incorporates Micro RGB Precision Colour, which the company states is capable of reproducing 100% colour coverage of the BT.2020 standard. This standard, established by the International Telecommunication Union, defines parameters for high colour accuracy. The Micro RGB display has also received ‘Micro RGB Precision Colour’ certification from the Verband der Elektrotechnik (VDE), a German certification institute.

    Design and features

Beyond image quality, the television features a slim metal chassis intended to offer a minimalist look that is compatible with various interior designs.

Samsung has integrated its Vision AI platform into the Micro RGB display, which supports advanced AI picture and sound technologies, as well as an upgraded version of the Bixby voice assistant. This assistant uses generative AI to facilitate a more natural, conversational experience, aiming to support users in interacting with their television content without the need to navigate away from what is on screen.

    Security and support

The display is secured using Samsung Knox, a security solution designed to protect personal data, and comes with a commitment for a 7-year free Tizen operating system upgrade programme. This is intended to offer ongoing software updates and extended product support for the lifecycle of the television.

Samsung Australia has confirmed that the 115-inch Micro RGB display will be available as part of its 2025 AV product line-up in the coming months.
