NetEase Inc. subsidiary Youdao has launched a targeted campaign to absorb users from Tencent Holdings Ltd., following Tencent’s decision to shut down its desktop artificial intelligence assistant QClaw less than ten months after its initial release.

In an open letter released Thursday, NetEase Youdao promoted its flagship desktop agent LobsterAI while deploying a dedicated migration tool for former QClaw accounts. The move aims to capture market share after Tencent announced on Sept. 24 that QClaw would immediately cease new user registrations ahead of a permanent shutdown scheduled for Dec. 24.

First launched in public testing in March 2026 by Tencent PC Manager, QClaw was built on the open-source OpenClaw framework as a personal desktop assistant supporting localized execution and remote access via WeChat. However, Tencent restructured its desktop AI operations in July, shifting QClaw personnel into the business unit managing WorkBuddy, an all-in-one AI workspace platform.

Addressing the shutdown, NetEase criticized the practice of treating user data and workflow habits as temporary bargaining chips in internal corporate rivalries, referring to Tencent’s historic “horse race” development strategy where internal teams compete against one another with overlapping products. NetEase emphasized its commitment to long-term investment, noting that LobsterAI has undergone 82 version iterations since its February 2026 debut as NetEase’s sole desktop agent product.

The rapid sunsetting of QClaw highlights a significant shift in how Chinese technology giants manage generative AI product portfolios. As companies move beyond early market experimentation toward strict capital efficiency, the classic internal competition model is being abandoned in favor of consolidated, enterprise-ready platforms like WorkBuddy. Additionally, the clash demonstrates that platform stability, data continuity, and long-term developer commitment have emerged as critical factors for retaining users who increasingly rely on AI agents for daily professional operations.
