After long negotiations, Microsoft and Openaai have agreed on a new or revised partnership. The agreement enables Openai to restructure it into a profit -oriented company and thus end tensions.

    Breakthrough after difficult negotiations

After months of tough negotiations, Microsoft and Openaai have achieved a preliminary agreement on the future of their strategic partnership. The two technology groups signed a non -binding so -called Memorandum of Understanding, which regulates the next phase of their cooperation and that Openaai paves the way to restructuring into a profit -oriented company. The partnership between the two companies began in 2019 with a first investment of one billion dollars through Microsoft.

By the beginning of 2023, further investments of $2 billion followed. Under the previous agreement, Microsoft acted as an exclusive cloud provider for Openaai and, in return, received preferred access to the Technology of AI startup. Infographics Artificial Intelligence: AI investments decrease, generative AI explodes a common Statement confirmed by Microsoft and Openai (via Reuters) that both sides “actively work on finalizing the contractual conditions in a final agreement”. The new deal significantly expands the ongoing cooperation in AI supercomputing and research.

    Tensions between the partners

Negotiations were anything but smooth. According to media reports, the tensions between the companies escalated so strongly that Openai occasionally considered to contact antitrust authorities in order to be able to out of the existing contract. Microsoft was an exclusive data center provider until January 2025, in exchange for the integration of Openais models in Microsoft’s products such as copilot.

The relationship worsened after Chatgpt’s surprising success at the end of 2022. Microsoft then began to develop competing products and be less dependent on Openai. At the same time, Openai was looking for ways to reduce its dependence on Microsoft and to gain more control over its technological future. Openaai announced that his non-profit mother organization will continue to keep supervision over the company and have an equity share of more than $ 100 billion (around 85.5 billion euros).

This structure is intended to make the non -profit organization “one of the largest philanthropias in the world”. The recent steps of Openaai not only have friends: the chatt developer is opposed to a heated legal dispute with co-founder Elon Musk, who tries to prevent conversion into a profit-oriented company. Musk argues that restructuring violates the company’s original charitable goals. The new agreement marks an important milestone for both companies.
