Members of Melvins, Butthole Surfers and more have formed a new supergroup, Gatta Morta. Check out their debut single, ‘Black Hall’, below.

The quartet comprises Buzz Osborne (singer, guitarist and founding member of Melvins), bassist JD Pinkus (Butthole Surfers), Melvins drummer Coady Willis, and guitarist/vocalist Clinton Jacob (Mr. Phylzzz).

“It’s always a good time for the world to embrace a new heavy/weird band,” Osborne said. “I had the idea for Gatta Morta while touring last fall. I realised I needed to start a band with these three. Seemed like a no-brainer.”

The musician went on to describe the band’s material as “solidly weird rock music that needs to happen”.

Pinkus added: “It’s been way too long since I got to write a heavy album from scratch with such high-calibre players with such complementary styles… and we’re just cat scratching the surface of what we got goin’ on!”

Jacob, who is the creative force behind Chicago pop-noise rock duo Mr. Phylzzz, commented: “I just had this feeling that one day we would work together.

“I became friends with Buzz over the past few years doing shows together and having him play guitar on a Mr. Phylzzz song. When I was asked to be a part of Gatta Morta, I was speechless, but I was 100 per cent ready for it.”

Willis shared: “Gatta Morta wages asymmetrical psychedelic warfare in the name of romance.”

Released via Amphetamine Reptile Records, the supergroup’s first EP features four tracks: ‘Taco Bellboy’, ‘Victims Of The Universe’, ‘Black Hall’ and ‘Clear Smoke’. Physical editions are available here.

You can watch an official visualiser for the bruising ‘Black Hall’ above through Ipecac Recordings.

Per a press release, ‘Burn Witch Burn’ blends “thick, riff-driven heaviness and warped, psychedelic passages”. It adds that Osborne, Pinkus, Willis and Jacob have created material that’s “simultaneously reminiscent of their previous work and entirely new”.

Melvins released their latest studio album, ‘Thunderball’, last year. Butthole Surfers, meanwhile, finally dropped their shelved 1998 LP ‘After The Astronaut’ this summer – marking their first album in 25 years.
