Kirby and the Forgotten Land + Star Crossed Land (Switch 2)

It goes without saying that the original Switch console had lots of fun games, but the performance of the console was lacking. Even though the original Switch came out in 2017, the handheld was still weaker than the PS4 and Xbox One consoles from 2013.

Due to the console’s lack of power, Nintendo has decided to re-release many popular Switch games over to the Switch 2. We’ve already received Switch 2 versions of two Zelda games, Super Mario Party Jamboree, and more.

The latest Switch 2 re-release is Kirby and the Forgotten Land + Star Crossed Land. Originally released in 2022, this updated version of the game comes with some new content and updated visuals. Let’s dive in and see what’s new in the Switch 2 version.

    Visuals

One of the biggest visual differences is that the framerate for the game has improved. While the original Switch version maxed out at 30fps, the Switch 2 version of the game now runs at a buttery smooth 60fps.

It’s not just the framerate that has been improved because the resolution is better too. In handheld mode, the original version ran as low as 540p to 720p. The resolution of the Switch 2 version via handheld mode is a much better 1080p.

The original Switch in docked mode maxed out at 1080p, but the Switch 2 re-release can output 1440p. Not to mention, the draw distance is much better in the new version, and the loading times are much faster now.

    New content

The biggest selling point of the Switch 2 version of the game is the ‘Star Crossed Land’ new content that has been added. This is a new storyline to the game where Kirby has to collect ‘Starries’ after a meteor crashes into the Forgotten Land. These ‘Starries’ are important creatures that will help seal away the ‘Star of Darkness’.

All in all, players can experience 12 new levels that have been remixed in special

ways. Many of the levels have been crystallised and have new paths and enemies for Kirby to face. There are also new bosses for him to go up against, too!

Lastly, there are new transformations for Kirby, too, in this expansion. He can turn into a Spring, a Gear, and even a Sign. Even if you already played the original game, this expansion adds new stuff to look forward to.

    Price

If you are a new player like me, you can currently get Kirby and the Forgotten Land + Star Crossed Land as a full game for around $119.95 NZD. The price can be lower if you are purchasing the game at a retail store, though. If you already own the original game on the Switch 1 console, you can buy the expansion upgrade for only $30.00 NZD.

    Overall thoughts

I never played Kirby and the Forgotten Land in 2022, so I was really impressed with what the game offered. It might very well be my favourite platform game on the Switch 2 currently. The new content also offers original players a reason to come back and relive this classic. If you have a Switch 2, you should get this game now.

    Verdict: 9.0/10
