Just a heads up, if you buy something through our links, we may get a small share of the sale. It’s one of the ways we keep the lights on here. Click here for more.

OpenAI just dropped a bombshell that’s equal parts convenient and terrifying: Instant Checkout for ChatGPT. Yes, you can now buy stuff directly through your AI conversations.

ChatGPT’s 700 million users can now go from “Hey, what’s a good coffee maker?” to clicking “buy now” without ever leaving the chat.

The feature, powered by partnerships with Stripe, Etsy, and Shopify, handles everything from product discovery to payment processing through something called the “Agentic Commerce Protocol.”

The good news? OpenAI claims they’re being responsible about it. Users must explicitly confirm each transaction step.

Payments are encrypted through Stripe, and data sharing with merchants is supposedly minimal. You can even cancel before final confirmation, which is more than we can say for most drunk Amazon purchases.

The reality check? With ChatGPT processing 2.5 billion prompts daily, this turns every conversation into a potential sales funnel.

Sure, the current rollout is limited to select shops, but OpenAI is already eyeballing features that could promote products based on your chat history.

And let’s be real—Google’s Gemini is probably scrambling to build something similar as we speak.

Look, seamless shopping sounds great until you realize your AI assistant might start feeling more like a very sophisticated salesperson. The tech is undeniably slick, but we’re basically watching the birth of conversational commerce on steroids.
