The battle for Avdiivka vividly depicts what the war in Ukraine has become: a hard-fought battle of attrition, logistics, and determination just as much as a clash of tanks and artillery. After the fighting had been largely static and positional for several months, the Kremlin directed its forces to seize Avdiivka, aiming to surround the city and tip the scales in the Donbas region. Their tactic was mainly reliant on sheer numbers—multitudes of undertrained soldiers armed with minimal gear were visibly marched forward in a way that several commentators labeled as “human wave” assaults.
