Henry Cavill, once celebrated as Geralt in the first three seasons of the Witcher Netflix series, is now Mr. Warhammer 40K. The former Superman actor has been known to be a massive Warhammer nerd for many years, and was first rumored to be attached to an Amazon-based project associated with the Games Workshop IP back in December 2022. That was (and seemingly still is) set to be a live-action series starring Cavill in a leading role, and now, according to a report by Variety, it’s being joined by an animated series which Cavill will be producing.
This animated program, according to Variety, is a direct spin-off from the 40K episode of 2024’s Secret Level—Tim Miller’s Amazon gaming anthology series that became best known for featuring an entire episode dedicated to Sony’s already-scrapped and buried Concord. It’s being made by Miller’s Blur Studios, alongside Amazon MGM and Games Workshop, and the Secret Level episode’s director, Dave Wilson, will be the full series’ co-creator and director, working with Band of Brothers‘ John Orloff. Cavill’s name appears as an executive producer, alongside Miller and Natalie Viscuso, a producer currently attached to a forthcoming Judge Dredd project.
“The response to the Warhammer episode [of Secret Level] was extraordinary,” says Dave Wilson, a longtime cinematic director with Blur, “particularly from fans who understood how much care went into getting the world right. This series gives us the opportunity to build on that foundation and tell a much larger story.”
As for what that story is, little is known beyond a focus on Space Marine elites, The Deathwatch, hunting down alien threats.
The live-action show is still described as “in development,” and that’s been the case for quite a few years now. In 2023 we heard that Amazon was intending to milk the license both for TV and movies, and then in 2024 that negotiations were finally over and scripts were going to start being written. It’s coming up on an ominous two years since that declaration without a peep of news regarding casting, let alone filming starting. Cavill, meanwhile, is seemingly mostly focused on his new enormous backyard smoker rather than dropping any new hints of progress.
