    The latest US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) report on H-1B specialty occupation workers unveils a shift towards highly qualified professionals. Indians received nearly 70% of H-1B approvals, while Chinese nationals accounted for about 12%. The report highlights a growing trend of H-1B beneficiaries holding master’s degrees or higher, with computer-related occupations driving demand. This underscores the tech sector’s reliance on Indian talent despite ongoing debates over the visa program.

    The educational profile of H-1B beneficiaries is evolving, with over half now possessing a master’s degree or higher. This shift reflects the demand for specialized skills in areas like artificial intelligence and biotechnology. The report also reveals that H-1B approvals heavily favor experienced professionals, indicating a preference for retaining skilled foreign workers for long-term specialized positions.

    In fiscal year 2025, the USCIS approved H-1B applications from candidates with professional degrees commanding the highest median compensation. Those with doctorate degrees received the lowest median pay, while bachelor’s degree holders fell in between. Computer-related occupations accounted for the majority of H-1B approvals, emphasizing the tech industry’s continued reliance on the program.

    The USCIS report arrives amidst ongoing debates in the US over skilled immigration. While business advocates argue that H-1B workers address genuine skill shortages, critics raise concerns about wage depression and displacement of domestic workers. The data suggests that employers are increasingly leveraging the H-1B program to recruit highly educated professionals for specialized roles, signaling a shift towards high-skilled positions over lower-skilled ones.
