Apple TV has announced an upcoming documentary series, featuring New York Times bestselling author and renowned relationship expert Esther Perel, that sets out to help couples find love where they least expect it.
The new series, titled “The Last Person on Earth,” will follow couples who, on the face of it, appear to be opposites. They’ll then be sent to one of the planet’s most romantic destinations to put into practice tips and guidance provided by Perel and a team of experts.
Apple TV has yet to confirm when the new show will debut, nor whether all eight episodes will be made available simultaneously. The streamer tends to release the first two or three episodes of new shows before settling into a cadence of a new episode each week.
In the press release detailing the show, Apple TV points out that there are more single people than ever before “and increasing levels of polarization and social isolation.” It’s against this backdrop that the show wonders whether opposites really do attract.
An unusual approach for Apple TV
“The Last Person on Earth” is notable because it marks a rare foray into the world of reality TV for Apple TV. While “Planet of the Apps” and “Karaoke Carpool” were both reality TV, this new show looks set to take a more educational and self-help approach.
With “The Last Person on Earth,” viewers will learn alongside those who take part in the show. Viewers will hopefully learn how they can strengthen their own relationships as the docuseries progresses.
The show also borrows some aspects from the popular Endemol Shine show “Married at First Sight,” where experts pair two strangers and coach them towards a lasting relationship.
In the case of Apple TV’s show, Esther Perel will be joined by a team of matchmakers and therapists. Perel is a Belgian psychotherapist best known for her work on human relationships. She’s no stranger to TV cameras, having appeared in a 2017 documentary titled “Monogamish.”
Having already earned a B.A. in educational psychology, Perel went on to also earn a master’s degree in expressive art therapy. Perel also took her show on the road, touring internationally with “An Evening with Esther Perel: The Future of Relationships, Love and Desire.”
She now runs events and therapy training and is the author of two books: “Mating in Captivity: Unlocking Erotic Intelligence” and “The State of Affairs: Rethinking Infidelity.”
Beyond a year of 2027, there is no announced debut date yet.
