A fire at a working men’s club in Sheffield which famously appeared in the 1997 film The Full Monty is believed to have been started deliberately.
The blaze broke out at Shiregreen Working Men’s Club on Shiregreen Lane just before 16:45 BST on Sunday, according to South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service.
A spokesperson said eight fire engines and a turntable ladder were sent to the scene, with no reports of any injuries. Crews left just after midnight and were due to return later to ensure there were no hotspots remaining.
The building has been closed since 2019 and has become derelict in recent years, with a fire also started there deliberately last year.
A fire service spokesperson said the latest blaze was also believed to have been started deliberately.
In 2020, Sheffield City Council refused an application to bulldoze the building after more than 1,000 people signed a petition to save it.
Ann Bentley, who was behind the petition having worked at the club for 15 years, said she was “absolutely devastated” to learn there had been another fire there.
“It meant so much to me,” she said of her time working at the club, where she met her husband Roy.
“Every time I pass it I want to cry. I would have loved to have seen it back on its feet.”
