Dave Grohl once paid for Corrosion Of Conformity drummer Reed Mullin’s rehab before his death.

Mullin died at the age of 53 in January 2020. Singer-guitarist Pepper Keenan has now revealed in a new interview that in the lead up to the drummer’s death, the Foo Fighters frontman tried to help Mullin.

When asked whether he knew Corrosion Of Conformity’s 2018 album ‘No Cross No Crown’ would be their last with the late sticksman, he told Suicide Silence guitarist Chris Garza’s podcast: “Well, his health was not well. And we tried everything. [We] didn’t know. He just couldn’t get it together, man. And Dave Grohl offered help – Dave Grohl had helped him with rehab, paid for it out of his own pocket, which was very kind. [I’ll] never forget that. And, yeah, I didn’t know.”

He added: “It’s a hard thing to get a grip on things like that if you’re not in it. It’s hard to say… I do think if he’d had gotten through all this stuff and could’ve cleaned everything up, and sometimes it takes that. And then if he was here right now, I think the band would be tearing shit up. I think he would come full circle and he would’ve been one of the people not scared to go backwards either, get back into it. But who knows? You can’t go there.”

Grohl and Mullin previously collaborated in the supergroup Teenage Time Killers in 2014 with Slipknot‘s Corey Taylor, ex-Queen’s Of The Stone Age bassist Nick Oliveri, Lamb Of God’s Randy Blythe and former Dead Kennedys frontman Jello Biafra.

Their debut album, titled ‘Teenage Time Killers: Greatest Hits Vol. 1’ was recorded at Grohl’s Studio 606 and was released on July 28, 2015.

Keenan added: “Now me and [C.O.C. guitarist] Woody [Weatherman] look back at things and we have nothing but wonderful stories about Reed. ‘Cause when he was at the top of his game, he was a fucking animal on the drums. You couldn’t touch him in terms of creativity and moving that type of music forward. He’s one of the OGs of the crossover shit back in the day, so he truly had helped invent something.”

Elsewhere, Grohl recently revealed the album that he considered Pixies’ 1988 debut album ‘Surfer Rosa’ to be the “perfect record”.

Speaking to NME backstage at Madrid’s Mad Cool festival, ahead of their set on the main stage, Pixies guitarist Joey Santiago and drummer David Lovering were informed of the frontman’s praise. Asked if Grohl was right, Santiago immediately replied: “I have to agree.”

With a laugh, Lovering concurred: “I agree. It’s my favourite one.”

Foo Fighters kicked off their US tour with Queens Of The Stone Age at Rogers Stadium in Toronto last night (August 4).

NME caught their first gig in Liverpool in the UK and gave it a glowing four-star review, which read: “That laid-back rock club vibe is what makes this work. Foos don’t have the bells, whistles, pyro, or blockbuster special effects of other standard stadium acts, just tunes and banter.”

“Who’d have thought that ‘This Is A Call’, ‘For All the Cows’ and ‘Big Me’ – written for their 1995 debut and for sweaty little rooms – would land like Queen classics on this pitch?” it added.
