New Radicals have shared their first new original song in 28 years in the form of ‘One Night Only (Break Loose Break Free!)’ – check it out below.

The group, made up of songwriter and singer Gregg Alexander and Danielle Brisebois, scored a huge hit in the late ’90s with ‘You Get What You Give’ and released only one album together, ‘Maybe You’ve Been Brainwashed Too’, in 1998.

Now they are back, with the new song serving as the theme song to the upcoming romantic comedy One Night Only, starring Monica Barbaro and Callum Turner.

The piano-led pop-rock track is reminiscent of their familiar sound, and has been written by Alexander and Brisebois, alongside Nick Lashley. It was released on Friday (July 31), and you can listen below.

Directed by Will Gluck (Easy A, Anyone But You), One Night Only takes place in a world where premarital sex is illegal, except for one night each year.

It follows two strangers, played by Barbaro and Turner, who meet while attempting to navigate the annual event. Maya Hawke, Julia Fox, Molly Ringwald and Nicholas Braun co-star. It is released in the US on August 7, while the UK release date is August 28.

    Watch the trailer here:

Alexander announced New Radicals’ split in 1999, one year after their only album was released. He explained at the time that he had become disillusioned with the touring and promotional demands that came with fronting the band.

He went on to become a successful songwriter and producer for other artists, co-writing hits including Sophie Ellis-Bextor‘s ‘Murder On The Dancefloor’, Santana and Michelle Branch’s ‘The Game Of Love’ and ‘Lost Stars’ from the 2013 film Begin Again, which earned an Oscar nomination.

New Radicals briefly reunited in 2021 to play ‘You Get What You Give’ for Joe Biden’s virtual inauguration parade, with the song having been adopted as a campaign anthem by Kamala Harris’ husband Doug Emhoff.

In 2024, the band also released new versions of ‘Murder On The Dancefloor’ and ‘Lost Stars’ for Harris’ presidential campaign.

Geese also revived interest in ‘You Get What You Give’ when they covered it for BBC Radio 1’s Live Lounge last year. Alexander described the New York band as “not just the coolest band in decades” but “one of the best”, and said his phone had not “blown up like this since New Radicals announced reforming for just one day for the 2021 presidential inauguration”.
