Sony’s blockbuster “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” held onto the top spot at the mainland China box office during the Aug. 7–9 weekend, pulling in RMB196.6 million ($28.9 million) in its second full frame.

The film has now amassed a cumulative total of $185.4 million since its July 29 opening.

Pearl Studio’s animated fantasy feature “All Wishes Come True!” maintained its strong summer run, taking second place with $20.4 million in its fourth weekend. Directed by Mu Zhengyang, the local hit pushed its total cumulative box office to $210.6 million since its July 18 release.

Dirty Monkeys and Damai Entertainment’s”Once Upon a Time in the Middle East” surged into third place with $15 million from preview screenings. Directed by Wen Muye (“Dying to Survive”) and co-written with Lang Qunli and Wei Zhong, the film stars Shen Teng as Xu Fu, a chef who moves to the Middle East to work at a Chinese restaurant to clear family debts. Teaming up with floor manager Ma Junsheng (Jiang Qiming), the duo turns the Dragon Restaurant into a popular local dining destination, only for their lives to be upended when armed conflict erupts across the region. The feature is scheduled to make its official nationwide theatrical debut on Aug. 11.

Enlight Pictures’ animated fantasy “To Your Island” opened in fourth position, generating $7.9 million over its three-day premiere weekend. Directed by Zhou Haoran and adapted from Fan Dawang’s popular web novel, the romance-tinged coming-of-age story follows a young woman guided by an origami crane to a strange island, where she attempts to unlock suppressed memories and help her ex-boyfriend, who has been mysteriously transformed into a rabbit.

Universal’s “The Odyssey” entered the top five ahead of its wide launch, collecting $6.9 million from previews to reach $7.6 million overall.

Mainland China’s overall weekend grosses reached $97.3 million, while the 2026 year-to-date revenue stands at $3.57 billion, down 31.8% from the same period in 2025.
