Ship design consultancy BMT has introduced a conceptual design for a potential multi-role strike vessel, Ellida Strike, for the UK Royal Navy.

The concept aligns with the Royal Navy’s plans to modernise its amphibious fleet by replacing older ships with new, flexible, and adaptable platforms, said the company.

BMT said the concept design has been “created to explore many facets of next-generation littoral strike design – while drawing on aspects of the Royal Navy’s evolving Multi-Role Support Ships (MRSS) programme but not representing a specific solution”.

The MRSS is “in the concept phase” and “aims to deliver the first of class by 2033”, according to the UK government.

The Ellida Strike concept emphasises modularity, allowing for swift alterations to suit various missions, including medical support, command and control, logistics, or combat operations using containerised pods.

The design incorporates long-range precision missile systems to augment the fleet’s striking power and reach.

It is equipped to handle combined air manoeuvres, with the capability to deploy and retrieve both crewed and uncrewed rotary-wing aircraft.

Ellida Strike includes a welldeck designed for the deployment and retrieval of landing craft and autonomous vessels, which is crucial for amphibious operations and humanitarian efforts, said the company.

BMT further explains that Ellida Strike features a digital infrastructure that improves connectivity and facilitates advanced command and control systems.

The ship’s design also focuses on the crew’s well-being by incorporating ergonomic features that enhance the living and working environment aboard the vessel, contributing to improved crew welfare and operational effectiveness.

BMT UK & Europe business development head Tim Neild said: “Whilst Ellida Strike is not the final answer, it’s a strong foundation for further development.

“It invites discussion, collaboration and refinement. As the Royal Navy continues to shape its requirements, we stand ready to adapt and evolve our design to meet the needs of tomorrow’s operations. This concept represents a capability-led approach to design – showcasing what’s possible and demonstrating that BMT has both the expertise and the openness to partner as requirements mature.”

The digitised marine scale model of Ellida Strike will be displayed at DSEI 2025 in London from 9-12 September.
