The Japan Football Association is bringing Blue Lock to life with a free, exclusive training camp directly inspired by the popular sports anime.
If you haven’t watched Blue Lock, the premise is simple: In an effort to find new talent, the Japan Football Union organizes an intense training regimen called ‘Blue Lock.’ Players who successfully complete the brutal course will represent Japan’s national football team in international competitions; those who fail will never get the chance again.
Blue Lock became so popular that the actual Japan Football Association decided to bring the camp to the real world. First announced ahead of the World Cup back in May 2026, the JFA × SCO Group ‘Future Camp’ took place in early August, recruiting a swath of young Japanese-American applicants in the hopes of finding the ultimate egoist.
Only 25 American youths of Japanese descent between 15 and 16 years old were eligible for the camp, which marked the Japan Football Association’s first overseas talent identification program on such a large scale. All expenses were covered for approved applicants, making it a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for serious competitors aiming for a future in professional football.
We got the chance to visit the Future Camp training grounds and speak with those involved in the project, including a few of the kids hoping to find a place on Japan’s national team.
Speaking to IGN, 14-year-old Kota Ishida admitted to being a massive Blue Lock fan, saying he hopes to transition from his position on the LA Galaxy youth team (one of Los Angeles’s professional football teams) to the Japan national team.
“Being part of this camp is a really good experience, because I get to play with players from Australia, Europe, and all around the United States,” he told us. “I didn’t know there were this many Japanese talents in the world. It’s really fun connecting and bonding with them.
“I really like Blue Lock, and this camp is a really good opportunity for me and my career,” he continued. “Getting put into different positions has been a challenge, and those challenges are helping me become a better player. This is the next step in my career to joining the Japanese national team, and I want to take this opportunity to grow as a player.”
JFA Chief Coach Hirata Reiji also opened up about his experience at the camp, saying that the anime inspiration behind it is a reflection of an integral part of Japanese culture. “Being inspired by anime is actually part of our culture,” he explained. “This type of inspiration is very important to Japanese people.
“It’s a great opportunity for players to achieve their dreams. I can learn a lot from them, as well, because their education and background makes their motives a little bit different from Japanese players in terms of everyday life or their attitudes toward practice. …there are so many talented players that I’ve met through this camp, and in the future, we would like to exchange cultures so those talented players can stay connected with Japan and soccer in general.”
Future Camp Project Lead and International Expansion Lead Jimuro Akito explained how the idea for the camp came about, saying that Blue Lock’s global appeal would be a sure draw to pique the interest of up-and-coming players.
“When we were thinking of talent identification overseas, we knew that we needed stronger awareness throughout the world — not just for the JFA, but other projects, too. Blue Lock is popular worldwide, and that’s why we decided to collaborate with the anime to bring it to real life,” he told us.
“We wanted a lot of applicants to be able to join this project. That’s why we aren’t charging and it’s a free project. Since we’re a nonprofit and we want to find true talent, we decided to do it this way and let the players shine.”
The Blue Lock Future Camp isn’t finished yet; the JFA has revealed plans to expand the event to different countries and regions as part of a broader effort to strengthen Japan’s global football scouting network.
Blue Lock has been confirmed for a third season, though exactly when it will drop remains unknown. In the meantime, fans can keep it locked to IGN for more information about the anime (or better yet, to get the latest Blue Lock: Rivals Codes).
