Apple’s new 40W charger has a secret mode for faster iPhone 17 charging

Apple introduces a lot of exciting products on Tuesday. But wait! There is one more thing, one thing that Apple didn’t show.

Apple has released a new 40W Dynamic Power Adapter with 60W Max charging. For $39 (it’s not available in the U.K. yet), this charger can add a 50 percent charge to the iPhone 17 and 17 Pro battery in 20 minutes, and that 10 minutes of charge results in about 8 hours of video playback. This wired charger can adjust its charging output to a maximum of 60W for a short boost in charging speeds.

Fast-charging on the iPhone Air is slower (50 percent in 30 minutes) and only requires a 20W or higher wired charger.

Remember, Apple does not include a charger with the iPhone. If you already have a USB-C charger, you can use it with the iPhone 17, but Apple specifications state that fast-charging is only possible with a 40W adapter or higher charger. It’s not clear exactly what’s at play here, but Apple implies that the 60W boost will enable faster charging than simply using a standard 40W adapter.

Of course, Apple lists the 40W Dynamic Power Adapter with 60W Max as compatible with all USB-C devices, but the real benefits will be seen by iPhone 17 users.

For more on the iPhone 17 event, we have the complete lowdown on the iPhone Air, iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, Apple Watch, and AirPods Pro 3.
