AMC Theatres is bidding farewell to one of the queens of country music.
The exhibition giant will screen two of Dolly Parton’s most famous films, “Steel Magnolias” and “The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas,” to honor the late singer, songwriter, and actress, who died this week at the age of 80. AMC said it will screen the films in approximately 200 locations across the U.S. beginning on Friday, Aug. 28 and continuing through Wednesday, Sept. 2. The venues will include AMC cinemas throughout Parton’s home state of Tennessee.
AMC Theatres said that wherever and whenever possible, the company will offer two matinee screenings daily, including one showing of each title.
“Steel Magnolias” was an Oscar-nominated drama that featured Parton as part of an ensemble of heavyweight actresses that included Sally Field, Julia Roberts, Shirley MacLaine, Olympia Dukakis, and Daryl Hannah. It was directed by Herbert Ross and was adapted from Robert Harling’s play of the same name. Parton played a boisterous hairdresser and if you aren’t ugly crying by the end you’re probably a heartless monster.
“The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas” was adapted from a hit Broadway musical and endured a tortured pre-production that saw the picture part ways with several directors before landing on Colin Higgins, who oversaw Parton’s screen debut in “9 to 5.” Burt Reynolds — yes, Burt Reynolds — sang and danced up a storm alongside Parton, who played a well-intentioned brothel owner (that part may not have aged as well).
Parton’s screen credits include “Rhinestone,” a Sylvester Stallone movie that no one should watch, and “Straight Talk,” a surprisingly effective and underappreciated comedy with James Woods in which she played a call-in shrink.
But really, any tribute needs to include “9 to 5” for the title track alone. Stream it.
