Ahead of the film’s 50th anniversary next year, Star Wars: Episode IV — A New Hope is being translated into the Welsh language.

StarWars.com announced Tuesday that Lucasfilm and Disney are producing the dub of A New Hope with S4C and the Welsh Government via Creative Wales.

Titled Star Wars: Gobaith Newydd, the Welsh language dub will be broadcast on S4C and its platforms on December 25, 2026.

The Welsh dub voice cast includes Osian Morgan as Luke Skywalker, Matthew Rhys (Widow’s Bay) as Han Solo, Rhys Ifans (House of the Dragon) as Obi-Wan Kenobi, Aimee-Ffion Edwards as Princess Leia, Mark Lewis Jones as Darth Vader, Llyr Ifans as C-3PO, Nia Roberts as Aunt Beru, Richard Harrington as Grand Moff Tarkin, The Ring of Power’s Owain Arthur as Red Leader, and Rhodri Meilir as Gold Leader.

Star Wars: Gobaith Newydd is directed by Ellyn Stern and produced by Lucasfilm Director of Distribution Operations Michael Kohn.

“We’re really excited about this project for many reasons,” Kohn said in the press release.

“I’ve been involved in a few Indigenous dubs of Star Wars over the years that aim to preserve and revitalize interest in learning the language. They have been tremendously successful not only in their communities but internationally as well. The chance to celebrate the Welsh language through Star Wars is one we couldn’t pass up.”
