Xbox Teases A Long-Awaited Feature Coming To Achievements

Xbox was at the forefront of achievement-pilling a generation of gamers, but there haven’t been many major updates to the platform’s progress-tracking system since it originally rolled out. One thing players have always wanted is a special achievement that pops just for earning all of the others in a game, similar to the Platinum Trophy on PlayStation. New Xbox CEO Asha Sharma said her team is working on it.

We know that because earlier today, Sharma went ahead and tweeted it out. “When you gonna solve the Platinum trophy equivalent with Achievements?” asked a fan. “Team is working on something for later this year!” she responded.

We don’t know exactly how it’ll work. Right now, achievements contribute to a total score earned across multiple games, and while earning all of a game’s achievements will mark the game as “completed,” there’s no named final achievement that gets added to your pool upon doing so. Gamer Score implies a continuum, while the Platinum Trophy implies a level of finality to the endeavor. It’s one of the reasons I prefer the latter system.

The lowkey reveal came amid the latest rollout of new features being tested for Xbox. The latest round of improvements includes the ability to include group-chat audio in gameplay capture clips, new ways to easily view and sort achievement progress, the option to restore earlier save data from the cloud directly on the console, and an expansion of game wishlists to allow for up to 1,000 entries.

As always, these features are being tested first by Xbox Insiders before they are eventually rolled out to everyone. While none of them is a major change on its own, another round of new improvements in quick succession speaks to the ramped-up cadence of platform fixes since Sharma took over. Faster iteration on the console experience was one of the goals she laid out in some of her early memos to staff.
