The MLB postseason sends six American League clubs and six National League clubs into a four-round bracket. The top two division winners in each league earn a bye. Everyone else has to survive a best-of-three Wild Card Series before the bracket shifts into the longer rounds.
The 2026 postseason is tentatively scheduled to begin Tuesday, Sept. 29. The World Series is scheduled to open Friday, Oct. 23 on FOX.

How Many Teams Reach the MLB Playoffs?

Division titles still carry weight. A Wild Card team can finish with a better record than a division winner and still receive a lower seed.

How Does the Wild Card Series Work?
There is no one-game escape hatch anymore. The Wild Card round is a best-of-three series scheduled across three consecutive days, with the higher-seeded team hosting every game.
The No. 3 seed plays the No. 6 seed and the No. 4 seed plays the No. 5 seed in each league. The winners advance to the Division Series.
Are Teams Reseeded After the Wild Card Series?
No. Once the bracket is set, it stays set. The winner of the No. 4-No. 5 matchup advances to face the No. 1 seed, while the winner of the No. 3-No. 6 matchup advances to face the No. 2 seed.

Game 163 is gone. If teams finish tied for a division title or playoff spot, MLB settles it mathematically, beginning with head-to-head record. If the tie remains, the league moves through additional criteria including intradivision record and interdivision record.
Who Gets Home-Field Advantage in the World Series?
The league champion with the better regular-season record receives home-field advantage in the World Series, regardless of its postseason seed. If the teams finished with identical records, MLB applies its tiebreaker system.
Are Postseason Extra-Inning Rules Different?
Yes. October baseball drops the automatic runner at second base in extra innings, so teams have to manufacture the winning run from scratch. Managers also begin postseason games with two replay challenges instead of one.
