Spider-Man: Brand New Day had a huge opening weekend at the box office, but just days before the general public was going to be able to see Tom Holland’s latest at the theaters, R&B artist Steve Lacy spoiled something Marvel had spent months trying to hide from fans. Valkyrae, the popular Twitch streamer and host, was interviewing Lacy at the movie’s premiere when it all went down, and was visibly uncomfortable when the “Bad Habit” singer name-dropped a character whose name had not been uttered in marketing up to that point. Then it got worse when he spoiled that character’s role, which had also been a secret. Looking back at that moment, Valkyrae says she felt bad for the fans who had gone unspoiled, only to have the surprise ruined days before the movie was out.

Lacy revealed that Stranger Things actor Sadie Sink plays Jean Grey, one of the most powerful X-Men. This was kept under wraps by Marvel, who put Sink on the movie’s press tour where she wasn’t even allowed to talk about the specifics of her role. The notion that she was playing Jean had been one of the running theories for months, but there was no confirmation in the trailers or pre-release marketing. So when Valkyrae asked Lacy about his favorite character in the movie and specifically asked him to not spoil anything, she was surprised to see him not only spoil Jean’s presence, but also that she served as the villain for most of the film.

Now, Valkyrae has spoken a bit about what was going on in her mind during that live moment, and how she tried to give the singer an out that he did not take.

“The second I heard a very specific word, I…dude, my face is so funny,” she recalls. “My reaction was insane. I couldn’t even hide it because I knew that it was not just a theory, but it was a straight-up spoiler. […] I was trying to maybe give him an out, because I knew it was a theory, so I was like ‘Oh, is that a spoiler?’ Like, I thought he was gonna be like ‘Oh, just kidding. I saw the theories,’ or ‘I guess we’ll have to find out.’ I thought he was going to say something to play it off, and then bro doubles down on another spoiler.”

Valkyrae explains how she politely wrapped up the interview, but she knew that this would likely make its way to fans who were waiting to see the movie later that week.

“I felt so bad because obviously it goes gigaviral, and it sucks for the Spider-Man fans, like the people who are waiting to watch the movie getting what is likely to be a spoiler. You never really know if it’s a spoiler until you watch, so I felt really bad for the real Spider-Man fans. Some people were really, really upset, and I think that’s valid. No one likes spoilers or even the possibility of one.”

Lacy’s song “oh yeah?” is featured in Brand New Day, so he likely saw the movie ahead of time or was at least privy to the details. Sucks to be Valkyrae in that moment because she did everything she could to both try to ensure he didn’t drop this bomb and then gave him a way to cover his ass, but alas, it didn’t work out. Sink’s pretty good in the movie, though. Hopefully now that the word is out, we see high-res versions of some of her scenes online soon.
