[WASHINGTON] US President Donald Trump said damage to ships and cargo would be paid for by Iranian funds frozen by the US after new strikes by Houthi rebels further strained global energy flows.
Trump in a social media post on Thursday (Jul 23) said that “from this point forth, any and all damages done to Ships, Cargo, or anything related thereto, will be paid for by Iranian Money that the United States has in its possession, and controls”.
“These damages may be very substantial but, nevertheless, this is the fair and equitable thing to do,” he added.
Trump has been escalating his threats against Iran in recent days as the two sides have traded strikes for nearly two weeks.
Iranian-backed Houthi rebels also struck two Saudi Arabian oil tankers, further widening the conflict. BLOOMBERG
