The Naval Postgraduate School announced Wednesday it has deployed the Nvidia DGX GB300 AI supercomputer to expand its computational capabilities and help students learn how to use AI for weather modeling, oceanic and operations research, cybersecurity, resilience planning and response planning.
“By supporting the Naval Postgraduate School and placing one of the world’s most advanced AI supercomputers in the hands of the men and women who defend our nation, we are empowering them to train on it, build with it, and lead America’s fighting force with the decisive advantages our Sailors, Marines and Joint Force deserve,” said Nvidia president and CEO Jensen Huang in a press release.
Nvidia donated the AI supercomputer to the Naval Postgraduate School Foundation, making it the first in the military to launch the technology. Teams from technology companies Vertiv, DDN and VAST Data provided infrastructure, storage and technical expertise to help speed up the deployment, according to the release.
The Nvidia AI supercomputer technology is not a data center but rather a fully integrated system combining computing power, storage, networking and software into a single platform, the release adds. That design choice means the Naval Postgraduate School can sharply increase the NPS.edu network’s computational capacity with the school’s existing power and water resources.
The supercomputer pairs 36 Nvidia Grace CPUs with 72 Nvidia Blackwell Ultra GPUs so that it can process large amounts of work in parallel rather than sequentially. The architecture allows Naval Postgraduate School students and faculty to train AI models, analyze data and “explore complex problems that were previously out of reach,” the release said.
Michael Owen, a U.S. Navy captain and a Naval Postgraduate School vice provost, said that students should understand how AI technologies such as the new supercomputer can and cannot support their decisionmaking.
“The question is not whether these technologies will exist. The question is whether future military leaders understand them well enough to evaluate their limitations, apply them ethically and employ them responsibly in support of national security objectives,” Owen said.
The AI supercomputer supports an ongoing Cooperative Research and Development Agreement between Nvidia and the Naval Postgraduate School that was unveiled in December 2024, according to the release. Through the agreement, the Naval Postgraduate School launched an AI Tech Center in 2025 equipped with DGX systems, Blackwell GPUs, Jetson devices and Nvidia’s Omniverse platform.
