Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder will play their Hacks characters on stage for the first time in a one-night-only live show in Hollywood – check out all the details below.
The show, about the bond between a veteran stand-up comic (Smart) and the young writer hired to punch up her material (Einbinder), concluded its fifth and final season in May to critical acclaim.
Now, Variety reports that the stars will reunite for a one-off show where they portray their characters on stage. The show, titled Deborah Vance & Friends & Enemies Live!, will be held on Friday (August 14) at The Fonda Theatre in Hollywood.
Supporting cast members from the series will also appear as their characters. The event is timed to coincide with phase two of Emmy voting, and is completely sold out.
Season five of Hacks has already broken the record for most Emmy nominations for a comedy series, receiving 24 for the forthcoming awards, held on September 14 in Hollywood.
Should Smart win for Outstanding Lead Actress In A Comedy Series, she would have won the same award for every season of the show, something no woman has ever achieved in the acting categories.
The show’s haul was beaten by medical drama The Pitt, which earned 25 nominations. Its star Noah Wyle, will be hoping to emulate Smart in taking home consecutive acting awards.
Last year, Hacks star Einbinder made headlines at the Emmys with her acceptance speech for Best Supporting Actress.
She ended with the political statement “Fuck ICE, Free Palestine,” which earned applause from the live audience but was censored in the broadcast. Ricky Gervais criticised actors on social media for sending political messages on stage at the awards, something that in his view was hypocritical. He later took down the post.
