[JAKARTA] A sell-off in Indonesian stocks and bonds continued on Monday (Sep 1), weighed by growing concerns over political stability in South-east Asia’s biggest economy. The country’s equity benchmark fell as much as 3.6 per cent, the most in nearly five months, before trimming losses to close down about 1.5 per cent, with financial shares including Bank Rakyat Indonesia among the biggest drags. The move came after protests heightened over the weekend in response to rising living costs and inequality. Stress also was evident in the bond market, with yields on the nation’s benchmark 10-year government paper up seven basis points…
France’s defence ministry is boosting investment in a 1990s radar system, as part of Paris’s push to bolster its early warning defences and curb Europe’s reliance on the United States. In a Normandy field pocked with rabbit holes, spindly structures form part of a long-range detection system dubbed Nostradamus, Europe’s only “over-the-horizon” radar which can see as far as Moscow. Developed in 1995, the technology works by bending signals beyond the Earth’s curvature, but has long been sidelined. Now, Nostradamus — named after the 16th-century French astrologer and reputed seer — sits at the heart of the country’s efforts to…
It’s normally Nigel Farage who seizes the megaphone, but his big Birmingham Reform UK party conference was metaphorically gatecrashed by Angela Rayner’s dramatic resignation, followed by Sir Keir Starmer’s shock reshuffle. The massive Westminster news on Friday meant Mr Farage had to move his speech to avoid a clash with the prime minister’s reshuffle, as many a journalist like me dashed back to London to pick up an even bigger story than Mr Farage – not something he’s that used to these days, after a summer of nearly back-to-back coverage of his insurgent party and its policies. But the news about…
IN 1901, US president William McKinley died from gunshot wounds that modern medicine could easily have treated. Though X-rays had been invented, they were not yet widely available, so McKinley’s medical team were unable to find one of the assassin’s bullets. And the antibiotics that could have prevented the onset of sepsis – McKinley’s ultimate cause of death – would not be discovered for another few decades. When US President Donald Trump talks about making America great again, this is the period to which he is referring. McKinley was a “strong believer in tariffs”, Trump has remarked, and under his leadership,…

[SINGAPORE] Asian exporters are absorbing about one-fifth of US tariffs and passing on the remaining costs, indicated Nomura’s Asia Economic Monthly report released on Friday (Sep 5). Advanced manufacturers such as Singapore have absorbed more than 20 per cent of tariff costs; other Asean nations absorbed none. China, Japan and South Korea have absorbed less than 10 per cent of costs.“This divergence reflects a greater capacity to absorb costs by advanced manufacturers in high-value exports versus lack of margin flexibility in labour-intensive exports for Asean,” said Nomura analysts Sonal Varma and Toh Si Ying.Looking ahead, Nomura said Asia faces a…
