GameStop is planning to re-open stores that it previously shut down, with one opening its doors this week.
The company announced these plans via its social media and revealed that this rollout would begin on September 11. IGN reached out to GameStop to see how many stores are re-opening, and was given the following statement from a GameStop spokesperson:
“The count is: at least one, as of tomorrow. As for the rest, stay tuned.”

It’s slightly amusing to make an announcement like this based on just one store, but for those who want to know the location of this specific shop, you can find it in Ohio at the following address: 4756 Ridge Rd., Suite P22, Brooklyn, OH 44144. GameStop is staying tight lipped as to how many more stores they’re planning to resurrect, but hopefully there will be more news soon.
GameStop has had its fair share of struggles over the last half-decade, partially thanks to the rise of digital games. The company has closed over a thousand stores since 2020 and has been cutting costs in other ways over the years. GameStop also briefly killed off Game Informer, a gaming magazine that was owned by the retailer and sold in their stores. Game Informer inevitably found a new owner, but it took nearly a year to bring the magazine back.
Now, GameStop has another obstacle to overcome: the impending death of physical games. PlayStation announced that it is ending support for physical games in 2028, which seems to suggest the PS6 won’t support discs of any kind. The jury is still out on what Xbox plans to do with its next console, but either way, physical gaming media is starting to be phased out by the industry. GameStop may be able to weather this storm, as it has been offering more collectibles and geeky items like Funko Pops for some time now. GameStop is also trying to acquire eBay, which would help diversify the company.
