Police are investigating the death of a woman who was found dead in her tent at Houghton festival over the weekend.

The woman, who has not been publicly identified, was found unconscious in a tent on a campsite on the last day of the festival at Houghton Hall in north Norfolk. She was pronounced dead at the scene on Sunday (August 9), despite efforts by on-site personnel to save her.

Police are now treating her death as unexplained while they await the results of a post-mortem examination, but say they do not believe there were any suspicious circumstances, per The Independent.

In a statement shared on the festival’s Instagram page, organisers said they were “deeply saddened to confirm that a person has passed away at Houghton 2026”, adding: “Our thoughts are entirely with their family and loved ones at this difficult time. We are grateful to our onsite medical team, event response team and to Norfolk Constabulary, who all responded immediately.

“We continue to work closely with the relevant authorities to support in any way we can with their investigations.”

Enquiries are ongoing and the woman’s next of kin have been informed.

Houghton festival is known for its house and techno music, which is played around the clock across its 1,000-acre grounds, making it the UK’s only 24-hour music festival.

The annual festival kicked off last Thursday (August 6), with this year’s edition featuring debut sets from more than 60 DJs and live acts. The event typically draws around 10,000 people, and has been held at Houghton Hall estate since 2017.

The gathering was founded by dance music legend Craig Richards, who owns the London nightclub Fabric.

The Princess of Wales was reportedly among those attending the techno festival back in 2023, while visiting friends the Marquess and Marchioness of Cholmondeley, David and Rose, who own the Norfolk estate.
