Christopher Nolan‘s “The Odyssey” topped the U.K. and Ireland box office in July with a gross of £56.2 million ($75.6 million), as the market posted a total of £178.2 million ($239.7 million) for the month, 35% ahead of the equivalent five-week period in July 2025, according to Rentrak.

The 2025 comparison total of $177.1 million was driven by “Jurassic World Rebirth,” “Superman,” “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” and “F1 The Movie,” which contributed $44 million, $34 million, $23.7 million and $15.2 million respectively. Year-to-date U.K. grosses have passed $1.05 billion, running 18% ahead of 2025 and 34% ahead of 2024.

After three weeks on release, “The Odyssey” is the highest-grossing title of 2026 so far, ahead of “Michael” ($71.4 million) and “Toy Story 5” ($71.6 million). Nolan’s action epic is now his fourth-highest-grossing film, closing in on “The Dark Knight Rises” ($76 million), “Dunkirk” ($76.4 million) and “Oppenheimer” ($80.4 million). The film opened to $16.7 million, the second-biggest opening of Nolan’s career behind “The Dark Knight Rises” ($19.2 million). At the same stage of release, “Oppenheimer,” “Dunkirk” and “The Dark Knight Rises” had grossed $57.3 million, $56.6 million and $59.2 million respectively, putting “The Odyssey” well ahead of pace and on track to become Nolan’s highest-grossing release.

“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” placed second with $71.3 million. Destin Daniel Cretton’s film opened to $49 million including previews, an opening bettered only by “Spectre” ($55.4 million) and “Avengers: Endgame” ($58.4 million), which went on to gross $128 million and $119.3 million respectively. “Brand New Day” is now the second-highest-grossing “Spider-Man” title behind “Spider-Man: No Way Home” ($130.9 million). After one week of release, “No Way Home” had grossed $62.4 million, meaning “Brand New Day” is tracking 14% ahead. Sony’s release joins “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” “Spectre” and “Avengers: Endgame” as the only films to gross more than $67.3 million in their opening week, all three of which rank among the eight highest-grossing films of all time in the U.K.

“Toy Story 5,” the top film in June, placed third for July after adding $28 million. The Pixar sequel is now the second-biggest title of the year, having overtaken “Project Hail Mary” ($46.5 million), “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” ($51.8 million) and “Michael” ($71.4 million), before being passed by “The Odyssey.” It is now the seventh-best-performing animated title in U.K. box office history, ahead of “Despicable Me 4” ($65.4 million) and behind “Frozen 2” ($72.2 million).

“Minions & Monsters” followed at No. 4 with $20.8 million. Pierre Coffin’s third standalone “Minions” title opened to $5.8 million, a debut comparable to “Sonic the Hedgehog” ($6.3 million) and “Hoppers” ($6.5 million), which went on to gross $26.0 million and $19.0 million respectively. PostTrak exit polling gave the film a full five stars and a 91% Total Positive rating from kids, ahead of “Minions: The Rise of Gru,” which scored four stars.

“Moana” rounded out the top five with $15.2 million. The live-action remake opened at a similar level to the 2016 animated original, debuting to $3.8 million versus the original’s $3 million opening en route to a $27.2 million lifetime gross. The new version also received a full five-star PostTrak rating across all audiences.

Olivia Wilde’s “The Invite” took No. 6 with $4.8 million, her second-highest-grossing film behind “Don’t Worry Darling” ($14.1 million) and ahead of “Booksmart” ($2 million). Among comedies, it has grossed similarly to “The Phoenician Scheme” ($4.3 million) and “A Real Pain” ($4.8 million), and it is now Black Bear’s fifth-biggest release, ahead of “The Monkey” ($4.2 million) and behind “Ferrari” ($5.6 million).

“Obsession” placed seventh for the third consecutive month, adding $3.2 million. Curry Barker’s film has climbed to third on the all-time U.K. horror chart, overtaking “The Conjuring: Last Rites” ($24.6 million) and “It: Chapter Two” ($25.4 million). Its cumulative gross of $26.2 million trails only “The Woman in Black” ($28.6 million) and “It” ($43.4 million), making it the highest-grossing horror release since 2017.

“Evil Dead Burn” grossed $3.2 million at No. 8, the third-most-successful entry in the franchise, ahead of “Evil Dead II” ($1.6 million) and behind “Evil Dead” (2013) ($4.6 million). It ranks as the year’s fifth-highest-grossing horror title, ahead of “The Mummy” ($3.0 million) and “Ready or Not 2: Here I Come” ($2.8 million).

“Supergirl” added $2.7 million at No. 9. Craig Gillespie’s DC Studios film is his second-biggest, behind “Cruella” ($12.8 million) and ahead of “I, Tonya” ($5.2 million). It overtook fellow DC Studios release “Blue Beetle” ($6.2 million) in July and is closing in on “Shazam! Fury of the Gods” ($8.1 million).

“Disclosure Day” closed out the top 10 with $2 million for the month. Its $17.2 million lifetime gross now sits close to “Hook” ($16.9 million) and “Schindler’s List” ($19.2 million) in Steven Spielberg’s filmography.

August opens with Eli Roth’s “Ice Cream Man” (Studiocanal), “Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie” (Paramount) and “Super Troopers 3” (Disney), all released Aug. 7.

The following week brings the Ewan McGregor and Anne Hathaway-led “The End of Oak Street” (Warner), New Zealand comedy “Holy Days” (Munro), family fantasy “Momo & the Time Thieves” (Signature) and “Sunny Dancer” (True Brit) on Aug. 14, alongside Matt Johnson’s Anthony Bourdain biopic “Tony” (A24), which expands wide on Aug. 21 alongside “Coyote vs. Acme” (Altitude), “David” (Vue/Angel), “Insidious: Out of the Further” (Sony), Jason Statham’s “Mutiny” (Studiocanal) and Black Bear comedy “Spa Weekend.”

The month closes on Aug. 28 with re-releases of “The Fast and the Furious” (Universal), “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” (Warner), “Kiki’s Delivery Service” (Anime Ltd) and “La La Land” (Lionsgate), plus new openers “Dog Stars” (Disney), “De Gaulle: Resistance” (Entertainment), “The Pout-Pout Fish” (Vertigo) and “One Night Only” (Universal).
