Mary Rivera, best known for her appearance in 2021 blockbuster Spider-Man: No Way Home, has passed away at the age of 82.
TMZ reported that the actor passed away on April 15 in Honolulu, Hawaii, after suffering a stroke, with relatives telling the outlet that her condition while in a coma meant “the family made the difficult decision to remove her from life support.” The report states that she was later cremated in a private ceremony.
A public online obituary (first shared by Deadline) read: “Mary Egida Rivera, 82 of Mililani passed away peacefully on April 15, 2026, in Honolulu. She was born on June 2, 1943, in Iloilo, Philippines to the late Vicente and Felicia Egida. Mary was a retired Missionary for the church. She was also cast in the last Spider-man movie, Spiderman: No Way Home as the Filipino grandmother, she was very proud of this accolade.”
The post continued: “Mary is survived by her husband, Alejandro Rivera; children, Carmela Jones (Jay), Paul Rivera (Leilani), Edwin Rivera, Angela Kelly (Jaime); 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.”
Despite only being in one scene Spider-Man: No Way Home, she stayed in fans’ memories as the grandmother or Lola of Ned (Jacob Batalon). Her scene included co-star Zendaya, and involved the introduction of previous Spider-Man actors Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire. The two men appear through multiverse portals in her house and clean up cobwebs for her, along with the webs they shoot at each other. She spoke most of her dialogue in Tagalog, a language spoken in the Philippines.
Relatives told TMZ that she had been encouraged by family members to audition for the role, and that she had “lived a good life and was extremely proud of appearing in the 2021 Marvel blockbuster.”
Spider-Man: No Way Home made $1.9billion (£1.41billion) at the box office, and was followed by new blockbuster Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which was released last week.
