EXCLUSIVE: Prime Video has set cameras rolling on Job Trafficking, a hard-hitting drama series about the world of industrialized online scams.
Nimrat Kaur (The Lunchbox, Dasvi), Roshan Mathew (Choked, Kappela), Kavya Trehan (The Royals) and Pavan Malhotra (Tabbar, Fouja) will take on lead roles in the eight-episode Hindi-language series, which is from Select Media Holdings and Chalkboard Entertainment. Prashant Nair (Umrika, Tryst with Destiny) is the director and Pratik Khanuja, Sameer Chand, Vikesh Bhutani and Shujaat Saudagar are the producers.
Coming out of the Amazon streamer’s Indian office, the show explores ‘pig butchering,” scams that involve perpetrators spending weeks or months building fake trust and false intimacy with victims online before draining them of money.
However, the series will explore a lesser considered part of a scam: Young people lured by fake job offers, who are trafficked across borders and forced to become the scammers destroying innocent lives. It follows three strangers – a trapped scammer fighting to break free, a defrauded housewife seeking answers, and a CEO caught in the crossfire – whose paths collide in a web of fractured trust, deception and exploitation.
Prime Video is billing it as a “gripping survival drama that exposes the dark machinery behind one of the world’s fastest-growing criminal enterprises.”
Prime Video remains one of India’s more popular streaming services, and has rolled out a significant originals strategy through series such as Paatal Lok, The Traitors, Dupahiya, Mirzapur, Farzi and The Family Man and movies including The Mehta Boys, Maja Ma and Ammu.
The service announced a huge slate of originals earlier this year, though Job Trafficking had not be unveiled at that time.
In May, Amazon merged India free streamer MX Player with Prime Video, which it claimed created the country’s largest streaming service. This effectively marked the end of the Amazon MX Player brand.
