Apple Reportedly Shelves Cheaper Vision Air In Favor Of Smart AI Glasses

Apple has reportedly shelved its plans for cheaper Vision Air model to current Vision Pro in favor of focusing on smart AI glasses to take on Meta. Here are the details on this.

Mark Gurman of Bloomberg is reporting that Apple has taken this decision to speed up the development of its first smart AI glasses.

Ever since Vision Pro was launched, there were rumors that Apple was working on a more affordable Vision Air model for mass adoption of its AR/VR tech as Vision Pro’s current price was out of reach for many.

But since Meta has been doubling down in its smart glasses effort in partnership with Ray-ban and Oakley, Apple deems it’s necessary to fast-track its own smart glasses effort by focusing on this project rather than a affordable model to Vision Pro.

    Mark Gurman reports:

The company is working on at least two types of smart glasses. The first one, dubbed N50, will pair with an iPhone and lack its own display. Apple aims to unveil this model as soon as next year, ahead of a release in 2027, said the people, who asked not to be identified discussing internal matters.

So while the first version of smart glasses from Apple won’t have a display, Apple was initially planning to have a variant with integrated display ready by 2028, but since Meta already has launched its display version of Meta Ray-bans, Apple is now fast-tracking its own display version so that it’s ready before the initial anticipated 2028 plans.

Apple is still expected to launch upgraded version of Vision Pro powered by M5 chip sometime later this year, with a likely announcement coming for it later this month in October.
